That’s it :)

Here is my Friday Firsts: Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough (ISBN: 978-0-547-22399-5) 292 pages.

I was born on the night of Samhain, when the barrier between the worlds is whisper thin and when magic, old magic, sings its heady and sweet song to anyone who cares to hear it.

I thought the first sentence was nicely written and pulled me in enough to continue reading. It was nice to be able to read about a different paranormal character besides vampires and werewolves!

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and she was supposed to be one of the most Talented among them. But Tamsin’s magic never showed up. Now seventeen, Tamsin attends boarding school in Manhattan, far from her family. But when a handsome young professor mistakes her for her very Talented sister, Tamsin agrees to find a lost family heirloom for him. The search—and the stranger—will prove to be more sinister than they first appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful that it could destroy them all. This is a spellbinding display of storytelling that will exhilarate, enthrall, and thoroughly enchant.

REVIEW: #58 The Everafter

Title: The Everafter
Author: Amy Huntley
ISBN: 0061776793
Pages: 256
[Rating:3]

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Madison Stanton doesn’t know where she is or how she got there. But she does know this—she is dead. And alone, in a vast, dark space. The only company she has in this place are luminescent objects that turn out to be all the things Maddy lost while she was alive. And soon she discovers that with these artifacts, she can reexperience—and sometimes even change—moments from her life.

Her first kiss.

A trip to Disney World.

Her sister’s wedding.

A disastrous sleepover.

In reliving these moments, Maddy learns illuminating and sometimes frightening truths about her life—and death.

This is a haunting and ultimately hopeful novel about the beauty of even the most insignificant moments—and the strength of true love even beyond death.

Review:

This novel was short – so immediately I didn’t expect it to be incredibly detailed or even that meaningful. How much of a story can be told in less than 300 pages?

The Everafter was an easy read, although – like I had anticipated, not incredibly deep. Although it had every intention of being an inspirational life-after-death tale, I felt that it didn’t quite capture my reading loyalty. The relationships were semi-flat although it was obvious Huntley had intended for each character to be a meaningful and memorable one.

But truth be told, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve read this book and I can’t remember a single name. So – so much for being memorable.

Basically Madison (who appears to be of teen age in the novel) “wakes up” in an area of supreme nothingness. In my opinion, this is probably the catholic version of limbo. There is nothing here. No scenery. No company. No feeling of love or fear. Though Madison knows that she’s dead.

Before her are a series of random objects that have all been “lost” in life. Much like the butterfly effect, each item played a roll in how her life was shaped. Each time she touches one of the objects, she’s taken back in time to her life where she learns to control the outcome. But what happens when she finds the objects? What in her life changes? Is it for the better?

For me, the objects were pointless other than taking the reader down memory lane to gauge what he life was like before death. There was nothing particularly special about her. Madison was just your typical American teenager. And in doing so, this book was nothing particularly special – just your average, American, young adult read.

While it wasn’t awful – it’d be a good read for a beach day or a rainy day inside. But I wouldn’t expect to walk away with a feeling of a changed life. You may not remember it a week later, anyway.

Seeing a High-Risk Fetal Doctor.. #Ultrasound #Pics

My latest OBGYN recommended to me on Monday that he would like for me to see a High-Risk specialist. Why? Well – when Carli was born she was only 5lbs, 4oz at almost 38 weeks gestation. The average weight around 37 weeks is about 6.5lbs. Obviously, Carli was not 6.5lbs. She was in fact 4lbs, 9oz when we left the hospital on Father’s Day 2008.

On top of a low birth weight, she also had low amniotic fluid and was breech. Was there an issue I had that was unknown or undetected? Had my placenta stopped working efficiently and caused growth restriction? My doctor wanted to be on the safe side and have my current pregnancy monitored to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Even though having a little 5lb peanut was kind of cool (man she got attention!) I can understand his concern. He also wants to make sure that it doesn’t happen again, and/or sooner.  So come Tuesday, I went for my regular OBGYN screening blood work (unrelated to high-risk doctor appointment) and Tuesday afternoon I got a phone call from the HR Dr setting an appointment for the following morning at 8:30 in the morning. YIKES that was early since it’s all the way in Orlando and I am currently in Deltona (and on top of that, rush hour Orlando is the WORST, and I had to drop Carli off with my Mom). But if I didn’t agree to 8:30 Wednesday, I would have to wait until a week later. So I went ahead and said, “okay” and went to bed early.

I got there around 8:15am, filled out some paperwork and waited until about 9:15 before I finally got called back to get my weight (cries) and blood pressure and ask me a series of questions. I was then asked to go back to the waiting room where I waited for another 45 minutes. Luckily I had Janet Evanovich’s Hot Six with me to keep me company. Thank G-d for books!

Finally around 9:45 I was called back for my ultrasound. I had two technicians, the regular one doing all the work and a student one who was watching and asking questions.  They were very friendly and I enjoyed being able to see my little bug! After the sonogram was finished, my tech asked if it was okay if the student tech played around a little with the machine and practiced. Hmmm.. more opportunities to see bug? Sure why not! I wasn’t going anywhere!

So Tech #1 left and Student Tech was like, “So what should we look for?” and we looked for the spine and profile. It was a lot of fun just watching Bug squirm around on screen. She was rolling and jumping and kicking and waving. It was.. wonderful.  It was still so crazy knowing I have a little baby inside me with a head and arms and legs.. let alone a nose and eyes and a mouth! I was definitely in awe.

The HR Doctor finally comes in just as the Student Tech was finishing up and he also ran an ultrasound on me to double check things. He noticed I had a fibroid mass in my uterus, which I guess.. supposedly is really common. He didn’t seem concerned. At first he thought it was a contraction because I guess contractions show up the same way. But when it didn’t change, he realized it was a fibroid. I am trying not to read too much about fibroids because I don’t want to freak myself out but.. I do know it increases my chance for a c-section by 6x. Not cool. But – hopefully it’ll shrink and go away!

Textbook Girly Nub.

He said fluids look good and the baby looks properly formed (on target) and doesn’t appear to have any down’s flags.  He stated that she was very active – and she really was! She was all over the place.. definitely an acrobat of sorts. It kind of makes me wince wondering just how painful she’ll be kicking me in the future. Carli was so laid back and not much of an acrobat in the womb.. so, if this kid has her Dad’s energy, I am in trouble from 15 weeks on!

Then what he would say next made my eyes bug out, “It’s a girl.” and I joked, “What – are you like… 50% sure?” and we all laughed. I was pretty sure you couldn’t tell a fetus’s gender before 16 weeks as parts were still growing. But I guess you can if you are skilled. The issue comes from thinking that a fetus is a boy based on the fact that a nub is present. But all fetuses have penis-like nubs early on.  But the girl’s nub eventually descends within itself and becomes girl bits. Based on the angle of the nub (he checked from all angles) he said, “I am about 90% sure it’s a girl!” He smiled at me, “But when you come back for your next ultrasound in a few weeks, I will be 99% sure.” I was really happy. We really wanted another little girl!

Quite a few friends are hesitant to believe it – because it’s so early and I get that. But for now, you know, if my fetal diagnostic high-risk specialist doctor tells me something, I am going to judge his word over Dr. Google.

My next appointment is on February 17th so we’ll see for sure then. ;)

REVIEW: #57 Goth Girl Rising

Title: Goth Girl Rising
Author: Barry Lyga
ISBN: 0547076649
Pages: 400
[Rating:3]

Synopsis: (Taken from the Book)

Time is a funny thing in the hospital. In the mental ward. You lose track of it easily. After six months in the Maryland Mental Health Unit, Kyra Sellers, a.k.a. Goth Girl, is going home. Unfortunately, she’s about to find out that while she was away, she lost track of more than time.

Kyra is back in black, feeling good, and ready to make up with the only person who’s ever appreciated her for who she really is. But then she sees him. Fanboy. Transcended from everything he was into someone she barely recognizes. And the anger and memories come rushing back. There’s so much to do to people when you’re angry. Kyra’s about to get very busy.

Review:

To be honest, after reading The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl, Goth Girl Rising was a disappointment. In the first Fanboy/Goth Girl book – the writing is so witty and personable and real. I found Goth Girl Rising to be anything but – and it stars a girl! You think I could relate?

Lyga had no issues writing from the point of view as a Fanboy/Geek – because, well– he’s admitted he is! But it wasn’t quite the same feeling of reality seeing him write from the point of view of an emotional, troubled, teenaged, female little girl. While both Fanboy and Goth Girl touch on stereotypes, I felt Goth Girl was overly stereotypical to being down right insulting to the Goth scene. Not all Goths are depressed and obsessed with death.  Not all are involved in drugs and sex.

But what bugged me most of all was Kira’s two-faced un-even personality. One minute she’s writing something so profound and the next she’s acting like a 2 year old. In the Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl -she was a bit out there and emotional, but she wasn’t so .. horrible? I don’t know. I just didn’t feel her in this book. I couldn’t relate. I couldn’t even find myself liking her – even after I realized why she was as messed up in the head as she was.

On a positive note, the book was an easy and quick read. The chapters are short – sometimes just a few pages. The reading style is very simple and non-complex so it’s something you can read just about anywhere. (But I guess that’s also a negative thing?) The writing just wasn’t up to par, although the story and the concept is interesting and  caused me to continue reading.

Will I stop reading Lyga’s work because of Goth Girl Rising? No. He had way too much talent poured into The Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl to judge him on Goth Girl Rising alone. Besides, Lyga is friendly and engaging with his fans and always willing to answer questions that arise. Lyga is a talent that shouldn’t be missed.. but, I would recommend not taking Goth Girl Rising too seriously.

iPHONE APP: Heineken’s Breathalyzer

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Heineken. All opinions are 100% mine.

Last year  Heineken ran a successful, “Enjoy Heineken Responsibly” campaign and continues to talk to people about the signs people should notice when they have had one too many.  With the holidays coming and going – it is important to be aware of the signs, not only for yourself but of your friends and family.

This year Heineken created an interesting ipHone app called the Breathalyzer. (Also called ‘The Know the Signs’), the Breathalyzer app turns your iPhone into a humorous device to kindly inform your friends if they may have had one too many drinks. You can even have them “blow” into your iPhone and it will show your friend which character they are turning “into”. You can also watch the videos and share the app with friends.

I tried downloading the app (which is FREE, by the way), but am having trouble with my iPhone so I am unable to give a tutorial on how to use it. But as it is free, feel free to check it out for yourself! Download the Heineken Breathalyzer iPhone app from the iTunes store (remember, it’s FREE!)

You can also check out the The Heineken Know The Signs website which should give you more information on the campaign!

¡Vamos! Let’s Bloggiesta!

This challenge is what I really needed after my mini-morning-sickess leave of “absence”. I have a lot of things to do to best utilize my website. After all – I really would like to improve the over all blog experience for my readers, myself, PR connections, publishers, and authors that I work with on a daily basis.

My website is a bit stale though – no? It was really fast paced for a while and then I got knocked out. I have a lot of catching up to do and this challenge, hosted at Maw Books Blog is going to help me do just that!

Basically they have a set of mini challenges, but you can also set goals for yourself! Many wonderful bloggers have teamed up with Bloggiesta and have written articles for us to help make the most of our blog.

Some goals I have for Well-Read Reviews this weekend are:

  1. Catch up on my feed subscriptions. Let people know that I still read them, and I enjoy what they have to say.
  2. Work on anchor texts – which includes going back in old posts and doing some major editing.
  3. Work on my ABOUT page. It’s my #1 hit and I haven’t even finished it! It’s nice people want to know about me. I should probably finish it!
  4. Update my BOOKSHELF. There are many books not listed (since October) so I have some catching up to do.
  5. Delete irrelevant pages.
  6. Create a Wishlist of wished partnerships and products that I am interested in reviewing.
  7. Fix the FAQ. I didn’t even know it was broken. Whoops!
  8. Add ADVERTISING information.
  9. Write reviews of books I have recently finished.
  10. Fix SEO Meta tags in each post (old posts) that did not have them.
  11. Host a giveaway of some extra books on my bookshelf.

I have quite a bit of work this weekend, and I hope that my daughter will allow me to work on it! We have a birthday party to go to tomorrow evening but hopefully I can get plenty of work in otherwise. Not sure if I can finish it all this weekend, but I will sure try my best!

This week, January 7th 2010:

What books did you get for Christmas (or whichever holiday you may have celebrated last month)?

One book I received was from my brother, YOU: Having a Baby by Dr. Oz – which I have already started reading. It has really neat little illustrations and written in a humorous way! I also received a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble from my parents and with that I bought Beautiful Creatures, The Everafter, & The Graceling.

Do you usually ask for books on gift-giving occasions or do you prefer to buy them yourself?

I don’t ask for books, but my family knows me pretty well to know that you can’t go wrong with giving me a gift certificate to any book-selling place! Sometimes I receive books without asking for a particular book (like the one my brother got me) but it was very thoughtful and helpful and ended up being perfect. I like to see what people purchase for me in regards for books, because I am fairly unpicky and I like to see the thought process behind it!

REVIEW: #56 The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl

Title: The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl
Author: Barry Lyga
ISBN: 0618916520
Pages: 320
[Rating:4.5]

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)
Fanboy has never had it good, but lately his sophomore year is turning out to be its own special hell. The bullies have made him their favorite target, his best (and only) friend seems headed for the dark side (sports and popularity), and his pregnant mother and the step-fascist are eagerly awaiting the birth of the alien life form known as Fanboy’s new little brother or sister.

Fanboy, though, has a secret: a graphic novel he’s been working on without telling anyone, a graphic novel that he is convinced will lead to publication, fame, and—most important of all—a way out of the crappy little town he lives in and all the people that make it hell for him.

When Fanboy meets Kyra, a.k.a. Goth Girl, he finds an outrageous, cynical girl who shares his love of comics as well as his hatred for jocks and bullies. Fanboy can’t resist someone who actually seems to understand him, and soon he finds himself willing to heed her advice—to ignore or crush anyone who stands in his way.

Book Trailer:

Review:

Donnie seems to be your average fanboy – lean, gangly, and pretty much invisible to everyone. Except for the fact that some of the more popular people see him enough to give him a hard time – enough to where you’re waiting for this quiet loner to blow up and take some harassers out.

Now that I’m standing, it’s easy to slip my hand into my pocket. As usual, I feel an immediate calm when I touch the bullet that I keep there. I started carrying it about a year ago. Everything is OK; I’ve added Mark to The List. – pg. 5, The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl.

Then he meets another loner-of-sorts, Goth Girl Kyra Sellers. She’s angry. She’s got issues. She tells it like it is. Although Goth Girl hates people, somehow she’s drawn to Fanboy and their mutual appreciation for graphic arts (and hatred of Jocks) pulls them together in an unthinkable (and almost unspeakable) friendship.

Kyra discovers one of Fanboy’s secrets – he’s been working on his very own graphic novel called Schemata. Kyra is also surprised that – even though their tastes in comics are fairly different – she loves Schemata and she wants it to be a success. In her own negative influenced, trouble-making ways, Kyra pushes Fanboy to learn some things about life. Can someone so pulled within her own shell, help influence someone to come out of theirs?

The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl was brilliantly written – witty, honest, and at times – just hilarious. Although touching a bit deeply on stereotypes, I found the book entertaining and well written. I found Fanboy to be a truly lovable character, who I truly sympathized with on multiple levels. I read this novel in record time (about 2 days, considering how sick I’ve felt) and immediately wanted to continue reading the next novel by Barry Lyga (centered around Goth Girl, called Goth Girl Rising).

If you have an inner-geek (especially if you like comics or manga, and can appreciate discussions) – or heck, if you like Neil Gaiman (as he comes up quite often) – then I definitely recommend this book.

Tuna, beneficial in Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women?

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of HealthyTuna.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

One of the biggest myths we’re faced with today is to avoid seafood, especially tuna. With high-level mercury fishes being correlated to fetal issues (primarily Autism) pregnant women are hesitant to eat tuna at all – which is a big mistake.

While doctors and researchers still recommend an intake of low-mercury fish in pregnancy and breastfeeding, there has been further research to show that there are benefits to eating fish (at least 2 servings per week) as opposed to mothers who do not.

The website healthy tuna documents some of that research. Both in other countries, and in the United States where the fish are farmed and raised differently.

Their findings indicate in a study that pregnant and nursing mothers who ate at least 2 servings of tuna per week scored higher on visual memory and IQ level tests (higher infant cognition) than those who did not. Being pregnant and knowing this – made me want to integrate more fish into my diet. It’s odd because I have been craving fish like nothing else this pregnancy and it tore me apart that I couldn’t fu fill that craving.

Now, I will eat my low-mercury fish options and not feel so guilty about it! The good thing about tuna is that it can be prepped so many different ways. One of my favorite tuna sandwiches involves the following:

My Little Recipe:

- 2 slices of 100% whole weat/whole grain toast.
- 1 tablespoon of low-fat/fat-free mayonaise (or miracle whip!)
- 1 slice of tomato
- 1 slice of red onion
- 1/2 can of tuna, drained of juices.
- Pam Spray
- 1/4 cup shredded lettuce

Directions:

With a pan set on Medium/Hot (usually a 6-7 on my stove) I spray with PAM non-stick, and then sautee the tuna, keeping it as together as I can. I do this until it is a little browned.

While tuna is warming, I toast my two slices of toast (I like things lightly toasted) and then apply 1/2 teaspoon mayo to both sides of the bread. When tuna is finished, I place tuna on one slice of bread and top directly with slice of tomato, red onion and then lettuce. Then, of course, top the whole thing off with the other slice of toasted bread.

Voila. It’s delish!

REVIEW: #55 Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater #Book

MAGGIE_STIEFVATER-SHIVER

Title: Shiver
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
ISBN: 978-0545123266
Pages: 400
[Rating:3.5]

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf–her wolf–is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It’s her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human–or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Review:

It took me about a month (??) to finish this book. 80% in part due to the lovely thing I call “morning sickness”. It sort of creates an apathetic feeling towards doing anything that you’ve enjoyed doing it before. Luckily I am feeling better and was able to finish the book this week – finally.

Grace has this odd fascination by wolves, even though she was almost killed by them as a young child. Even though one pulled her from her swing one day in her backyard and savagely started biting her – she recovers quickly only to have this obsession with watching them, especially one wolf with yellow eyes, who she believes saved her from the others who attacked her.

The wolf is Sam, a boy her age who is werewolf. When the temperatures are hot, he is able to take his human form again, but when they drop below 50 degrees, he changes into his wolf counterpart and watches Grace from afar. The part I did enjoy about this  book is that it showed it is possible to develop a connection with a species other than yourself. Something that involves mutual respect and understood boundaries.

What I didn’t understand is how (psychologically speaking) she was drawn to the wolves after her attack. Why and how did she not get some form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? Personally, after almost being run off the road by a Winnebago last February on Valentine’s Day, I still have a terrible visions of almost running into a cement wall. When cars drive too close, or begin to sway towards my direction, my heart starts beating fast and I verge on freaking out – as if I am going to relive it all over again. What I don’t get – is, how does Grace not have some sort of anxiety with the wolves?

I hope that Maggie Stiefvater has some sort of explanation for this in the book that is to follow. Over all, Shiver was an enjoyable (although not particularly thrilling, suspenseful or life altering read). It was simply – entertaining. The characters were a bit flat.. as Grace did not seem to have much of a personality, and going in between view points between Sam and Grace was difficult as there were no particular differences in voice.

I enjoyed Shiver, but more than likely will look into borrowing the sequel from the library rather than purchasing it.

Not quite sure what I plan to read this week other than YOU, as it’s a pretty big book. So I am just going to play it by ear. :)

That’s it :)

Here is my Friday FirstsThe Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga (ISBN: 978-0-618-91652-8) 311 pages.

I want to NOT ride the bus to school every day, but that would be a waste of a really big want – it’ll take care of itself eventually.

Who wants to ride the bus? I certainly hated it and was glad I used to live in walking distance to my high school!  As for this sentance, I would love to know what this person’s reasoning behind not wanting to ride the bus. Just WHAT is their issue?
