This meme is hosted by Booking Through Thursday Blog. This week’s question is:
Do you read everything all the way through or do you feel life really is too short to read bad books?
I am a guilty reader. I feel the guilt when I stop reading a book. The guilt is immense – guilt for buying a book and not reading it all the way through and also because I am embarassed for the author. Maybe that’s ridiculous but I guess I am a tad sensitive.
But I also feel that if you force yourself to read anything you don’t like, then it’ll suck the love of reading right from you. I hate the feeling of temporarily losing the reading love because I am obligated to finish books in which I have no interest. So, reading a bad novel is sort of a catch 22, isn’t it?
I think when it comes right down to it, I’d rather feel the guilt than lose the love.

Well said. I’d rather “feel the guilt,” too. It certainly is a real disappointment when I find I don’t like a book I’ve actually paid for. But I’d still rather spend my precious reading time on books I enjoy.
I’m the pretty much the same way. Here is mine: http://thecrowdedleaf.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/booking-through-thursday-november-12-2009/
Trust me: after a while, you stop feeling guilty! If a book is truly bad or poorly written, I feel no remorse. I might be angry at myself for buying it (or at the reviewer who convinced me it was a great read), but that’s about the extent of it. If I am simply bored or can’t focus, I just set the book aside for another time.

I definitely feel the guilt. Plus, I guess I’m an optimist in this regard. Maybe it’ll get better after the first hundred pages? They rarely do, but I can’t lose my hope.
