Do You Look to Someone Else for  Your Book Recommendations?

You know– besides me, of course! ;)

Just kidding!

Personally, I look to other bloggers. A while ago I wrote a controversial post about how I felt that Disney-Hyperion was shunning the book bloggers, and surprisingly, I received a lot of flack about it. A lot. I felt that we (book bloggers) should not be discriminated against in regards to book reviews, while while other bloggers felt that book bloggers aren’t that important, can be overly greedy (i.e. BEA) and I was acting as if I was entitled.

(Yes, I cried a little bit over that entry.)

In my opinion, book bloggers are a HUGE reason books are being sold and read. In my personal experience, I look to other book bloggers for my book recommendations. I rarely, if ever, just walk into a book store and pick up something that looks good. The book, now, is usually brought to my attention by other bloggers via their blog, twitter, or goodreads.

I have a few long time friends, though, that I look to for suggestions. My friend and former college roommate, Gina, recommended the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon which I adore. Long time best friend Iara got me started on the Harry Potter series back when we were still in high school. I also take suggestions from my mother-in-law who shares a lot of the same interest in reads. The majority of book suggestions, though, come from other bloggers like you.

So, thank you!

What about you? Who do you look to for your next read? Who often gives you the best book recommendations? Are you someone who looks at the NY Best Sellers and go from there? Maybe Oprah? A book club? How do you know what to read next?

I definitely consider bloggers in my decisions whether to read a book, especially if I see the same book promoted with good reviews on a number of sites. I really appreciate the time it takes to review books; most do it because they love it and that makes a huge difference.

I do look to others for book recommendations; I do it through a combination of book bloggers and other sites and other people that I talk to and the book podcasts that I listen to. But mainly I get book recommendations through book bloggers
