The first line can make or break a reader’s interest. Just how well did the author pull you in to the story with their first sentence? To participate in this weekly book meme is extremely easy.

  • Grab the book you are currently reading and open to the first page.
  • Write down the first sentence in the first paragraph.
  • Create a blog post with this information. (Make sure to include the title & author of the book you are using. Even an ISBN helps!)
  • Did this first sentence help draw you into the story? Why or why not?
  • Grab an image code:

That’s it :)

Here is my Friday Firsts: Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris (ISBN: 978-0-441-01218-3)

I found the note taped to my door when I got home from work.

This is the first one I have read in the past few weeks that didn’t draw me in. Had I not already been a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse series, I probably would have not been to “Oh I MUST read more!”. Luckily for Charlaine Harris, she has managed to already get that feeling going from the previous novels so the opening line of this book didn’t need to be entirely impressive.

That quote kind of makes me want to know what the note was about, but you’re right, it’s not really engaging.

If the young Talib bodyguard had know that making the cellphone call would kill him, he would not have done it.

Awesome first lines can be really hard to come up with, so I try to give them at least a whole paragraph to hook me. *L*
