The first line can make or break a reader’s interest. Just how well did the author pull you in to the story with their first sentence? To participate in this weekly book meme is extremely easy.
- Grab the book you are currently reading and open to the first page.
- Write down the first sentence in the first paragraph.
- Create a blog post with this information. (Make sure to include the title & author of the book you are using. Even an ISBN helps!)
- Did this first sentence help draw you into the story? Why or why not?

That’s it
Here is my Friday Firsts: These Things Hidden by Heather Gudenkauf (ISBN: 978-0-7783-2879-7) 337 pages.
I stand when I see Devin Kineally walking toward me, dressed as usual in her lawyer-gray suit, her high heels clicking against the tiled floor.
I don’t know why it bothered me that the laywer’s name was Devin. I wouldn’t say Devin is a particularly lawyer-like name. Don’t get me wrong, I love the name as it is a family name. But I think names have a certain reputation and I would have imagined a lawyer to have a stronger more lawyer-appropriate name for the field that she is in. So upon reading this first sentance I wondered, “Who is this lawyer? Is she any good? Can I take her seriously?” and all from a name! Then I wondered why the main character, Allison, needed a lawyer to begin with. What kind of crime did she commit?
If the point of a first sentence is to stir questions and get the reader wanting to know more, then it was successfully done. Although I did feel that something as small as a name choice may have set the tone of the book as being entertaining but not necessarily a literary masterpiece.
Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)
Now their legacy of secrets is focused on one little boy. And if the truth is revealed, the consequences will be unimaginable for the adoptive mother who loves him, the girl who tried to protect him and the two sisters who hold the key to all that is hidden.
