Synopsis: (Taken from back of book)

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By the age of thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate- a life and a role that she has never challenged … until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister. So, Anna makes a decision that for the most would be unthinkable – a decision that will tear her family apart and possibly have fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

Review:

From the moment I opened this book, I could not put it down. I find one of the hardest parts of reading a book, is beginning it. This was not the case for “My Sister’s Keeper”. Delightfully written, this sad tale will draw you in from the very first page.

As a mother, this novel struck me very deep. I couldn’t imagine being in the same situation as this family, although I know it happens to parents all over the world. Would we have another child if that meant saving the ones we have? Of course. This novel, however, shows you how those decisions affect every one and how a decision so “easy” is not so black and white.

Picoult has written a heart-wrenching tale that captured my interest and had me talking about it immediately afterwards – filled with many emotions. This was my first experience reading a novel by Jodi Picoult, and after reading “My Sister’s Keeper”, it will not be my last.
