REVIEW: #45 Bad Girls Don’t Die

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)
Alexis thought she led a typically dysfunctional high school existence. Dysfunctional like her parents’ marriage; her doll-crazy twelve-year-old sister, Kasey; and even her own anti-social, anti-cheerleader attitude.
When a family fight results in some tearful sisterly bonding, Alexis realizes that her life is creeping from dysfunction into danger. Kasey is acting stranger than ever: her blue eyes go green sometimes; she uses old-fashioned language; and she even loses track of chunks of time, claiming to know nothing about her strange behavior. Their old house is changing, too. Doors open and close by themselves; water boils on the unlit stove; and an unplugged air conditioner turns the house cold enough to see their breath in.
Alexis wants to think that it’s all in her head, but soon, what she liked to think of as silly parlor tricks are becoming life-threatening–to her, her family, and to her budding relationship with the class president. Alexis knows she’s the only person who can stop Kasey — but what if that green-eyed girl isn’t even Kasey anymore?
Review:
I have no idea why I picked this book up from the library. I never heard of this book before, or the author. But for some reason the front cover creeped me out. Needless to say, I had to borrow it.
I started reading Bad Girls Don’t Die in the car, on the way out to the Cape for lunch (which is about an hour away). The beginning was alright – typical angsty teenager who didn’t fit in, nor wanted to. Add pink hair. I didn’t immediately like her as she had a lot of anger/jealousy issues, but she grew on me.
Alexis enjoys photography and enjoyed doing it the old fashioned way with manual film and developing the pictures in her own darkroom. One evening, late at night (which I didn’t understand what she was doing out that late at night, anyway) – she notices an eery glow and sees if she can capture it on film.
Strange things begin to happen in her household. Her father has a mysteriously been in a near fatal car accident, and Alexis may be to blame as she’s the one who is always in trouble in school. On top of that, water boils on the stove by itself and her sister’s eyes start turning different colors. Overall, it’s an interesting book. It ended up creeping me out enough as I was reading at night that I was temporarily scared of turning out the light.
Although it’s not a life altering read, it was still an entertaining one and anyone who enjoys a good horror book about spooky dolls, may get a kick out of it.
