January is an EXCITING month with Scentsy!

Coffee Tree

I have been waiting for January for a while, now. Two exciting things with Scentsy are happening this month: Bring Back My Bar promotion and the Double Hostess Rewards!

Bring Back My Bar

I just joined Scentsy, so forgive me if I am wrong when I say this — but every six months (or a year) Scentsy allows costumers to vote on their favorite past scents that have been discontinued. The top few scents are then brought back for a short period of time, aka. “Bring Back My Bar”. The top voted scents that have made it back to us this January are:

  • Amaretto - An almond-scented fragrance sweetened with honey and spice.
  • Berries & Bubbly - Sweet strawberry aroma with champagne.
  • Bubblegum - The true scent of baseball-card bubblegum—sugar and cotton candy with a hint of mint.
  • Buttermints - Melt-in-your-mouth peppermint candies with subtle hints of creamy butter.
  • Cherry Almond Pie - Orville’s favorite dessert. Graham crackers, sweet almond, cream, and cherries.
  • Cinnamon Cider - Tart apples balanced with oak and spicy cinnamon.
  • Coffee Tree - Bold and sophisticated. Wake up to the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans.
  • Cranberry Spice - A generous blend of cloves and ginger help define the sophistication of tart cranberry.
  • Eucalyptus - Soothing, medicinal, and fresh.
  • Flower Shop - Just like walking into a flower shop.
  • Mad About Mint - A blast of mint: spicy peppermint, spearmint, and wintergreen.
  • Mysterious - Spicy, fresh, and woody, this masculine fragrance evokes strength and vitality.
  • Pretty in Pink - Feminine white florals with a touch of grapefruit over rich amber and wood.
  • Spiced Grapefruit - Mandarin and bergamot citrus perfectly balanced with spicy coriander, nutmeg, and allspice.
  • Spring Clean - Refreshing spring air and morning dew blended with orange blossom and crisp white florals.
  • Taj Mahal - A soft oriental fragrance built on a base of musk and amber with subtle florals.
  • Toasted Apple Butter - Creamy butter blended with ripe apples accented with rich spices.
  • Toasted Caramel Sugar - Warm milk with caramelized sugar and toffee, all swirled together with the scent of silky, sweet vanilla musk.
  • Twilight - A lovely, sophisticated scent, infused with soft romantic florals and ocean air.
  • Vanilla Walnut - A warm fragrance with roasted walnut and sweet vanilla bean.
Save money and purchase a Bring Back My Bar Sampler for just $100. This includes 1 bar of every scent brought back this promotion. [View the entire Bring Back My Bar collection here.]

So if you had to choose just 3 bars, which one would you choose?

After Kate’s hospital visit, I am left thinking, “What Now?”

My beautiful little girl

Tuesday was Kate’s hospital procedure. I wasn’t looking forward to my tiny little girl being put under anesthesia but I was looking forward to getting some answers. Kate was scheduled for an endoscopy by her gastroenterologist and a ton of blood work ordered by both her gastroenterologist doctor and her endocrinologist doctor.

I was instructed not to let Kate have any food after midnight as her procedure would be at 8am and it was best if she had not eaten for about 8 hours prior. Kate went to bed at 8:30 and I tried as hard as I could to get her to stay up later so I could pump her full of breast milk here and t here but she had enough of awake time and her little body demanded sleep.

Smiling at herself in the camera phone.

She woke up around 4:30am hungry, and normally by then I would get up with her since 8:30-4:30 is 8 hours and that is a long time for a breastfed child to not eat. But I could only avoid her at all costs. If she saw me or heard me, the tantrums would start. The look in her eyes would say, “I am hungry! Why are you not feeding me??!”

We left for the hospital as we were to be there by 7am. We were there by about 6:40 and Kate was beyond cranky. Luckily, I thought, we would only have to deal with this for another hour and then she would be under and not feel the pain of hunger or thirst. It felt inhumane, denying my child something so basic as food & drink when they not only NEED it to survive, but Kate’s tiny and needs every calorie she can get her hands on that agrees with her system.

7 came and went as did 8. The receptionist had crossed off our names but claimed he didn’t see us. Um, what? I looked at the sign in sheet and it said I was there and it had been crossed off. What the heck? “I know there is not much you can do but it has been way too long since she has eaten and she is really hungry…” I said, frustrated to hear my 17 month old cry with frustration. Even a year and a half later, I grow incredibly agitated and frustrated when my child cries and I cannot soothe her. It’s motherly instinct, you know. You hear the cries of your child and you want to soothe them. You NEED to soothe them and anyone that stands in the way — so help them, God!

We were finally called back to registration, and then the waiting room where Kate was put into her hospital gown and overly large socks. Now, keep in mind that this was a pediatric doctor and she was at the hospital that had the Disney Pavillion! Now why on earth are they not prepared to have baby-sized hospital gear? Is this common?

Me and my Sweetie Petitie.

But, anyway– Kate started perking up when she was being given a lot of attention. The anesthesiologist, Dr. London, was incredibly gentle and kind with Kate. Now, if you know Kate, you know how completely opposite in personality she is from her very outgoing and friendly big sister, Carli. Kate will sit back, observe and you can’t always tell what she’s thinking. She is, though, very animated with her eyes. She gives death stares like no other. Even so, the doctors and nurses found her endearing and adorable and she really liked that. She would shoot a few smiles here and there. It was also nice and reassuring to hear (as a parent) that they were behaving so well. Either they were lying to me (because I could have sworn she was being one nasty toddler) or I expect to much from my children. Either way, I appreciated that they made me feel like no matter how she was behaving, they truly liked her.

Forrest really wanted to go back with Kate. When it comes to our girls and their illnesses, he really steps up as Papa Bear. In fact, he tends to be way more motherly during their illnesses than I am. When he knew Kate was to be put under, he really wanted to be with her. I could sense the tension and the anxiety he had, and she wouldn’t let anyone but me hold her — so we agreed that I would go back with her. We didn’t want any more anxiety than there was.

So, I went back with Kate and held her the entire time. I sat on her bed, cuddled her, and they applied the gas mask. I felt her body grow heavy and she began to relax. Within a minute, she was sleeping heavily. They picked her up and laid her on the bed. It was surreal. I have never seen her sleep so heavily. (She’s not a good sleeper). I left the room and went to join my husband in the waiting room.

The wait was quick. Maybe 20 minutes? It felt like no time at all and they were calling us back to go be with Kate in recovery.

We had to get a picture, first.

She was still sleeping when we got there. Unlike adults, they weren’t yelling in her ear to wake up. They were quiet and taking her vitals and let us be the ones to wake her up. So, I woke her up with gentle kisses and whispers in her ear and gently rubbing her arm. I woke her up the way I would have wanted to wake up if I was her. It’s terrifying waking up after surgery/procedures when you were put under. I’ve been in that position twice, and the last thing I wanted was for her to be startled and confused.

It took her a few minutes to wake up. She would wake up enough to want me to hold her but she would fall back asleep. It was like that for maybe 20 minutes. The nurses and doctors said that she was waking up “really good!” though, so I wasn’t worried.

The doctor came in and told us that he was sorry but they couldn’t do the bloodwork. The lab had sent adult-sized blood viles and equipment, rather than the pediatric, child-sized and they were unable to get the blood work while she was under. I was visibly upset but kept my cool. The bloodwork I wanted even more than the endoscopy. The bloodwork included metabolic conditions, thyroid, growth hormone levels, etc. My gut has always told me that the bloodwork would have the answers so when he said they couldn’t do it, my heart sank.

Supposedly it was the most mad he has ever been and really took it out on the lab employees. I would never have known as the doctor was soft spoken to us. But, anyway — he told us that there is a sphincter from her esophagus to her stomach that closes after eating and it helps keep the food down. I guess supposedly its not closed as a newborn (hence spit up) but it matures as they get older (around 6 months of age). But hers was completely open. It is like a cup without a lid. When it becomes overly full or agitated, the contents will spill out and that explains her random vomiting episodes after eating. He seems to think that it “explains” her FPIES and “this is it” but I know better.

FPIES doesn’t happen 10-15 minutes after eating. Not usually, anyhow. Kate’s FPIES episodes happen anywhere from 2 hours to 4 hours after ingestion. That is well beyond the normal digestion period. He said this should explain her not wanting to eat and I had to remind him multiple times that her appetite is NOT an issue. She would eat all day if you let her.

By now it was around 10:30 and Kate still had not eaten anything. When I expressed this, he THEN told us that she could have eaten 4 hours prior to her procedure and not 8 — I was mad. As her procedure didn’t happen until about 9:30am, I could have fed her at 5:30 that morning! We would have had a MUCH happier baby, then. It just added to the frustration I was feeling.

Afterwards, we went to the lab to get some bloodwork done. They had a hard time, for some reason, because they were getting it out of an IV rather than the way they normally take blood. But Kate was good the entire time and never showed any discomfort in what they were doing. It didn’t seem that was over, though. They could only get 10mL of blood from her, because she was only 16lbs. (Yes, she actually weighed at 16lbs that morning!!)

But, anyhow — she recovered nicely. She was herself a few hours later and we doted on her and held her and thanked her for being in our life and being such a good sport, regardless of not understanding what was going on.

Unfortunately, I don’t feel like I have any more answers. I had figured as much that she couldn’t hold her stomach contents in as well as others, but her body is just not as advanced as others her age. I did, however, lose confidence in my doctor a bit. He said he wanted to possibly start her on antacids since it was a little red from stomach acid and somehow that will close the hole? I kept asking but he just kept repeating a bunch of nothing. How is antacids going to magically close the stomach?

Plus we really don’t want to pump her body full of medications without fixing the issue. He also said that he would probably not scope her again unless the medication didn’t help. Okay, well the medication would just mask the symptoms of reflux, reflux that doesn’t really happen much anymore. But it’s not going to prevent random vomiting episodes and how is it REALLY going to close the hole. Unless he did scope her again, how would he even know if it closed or not? He wouldn’t.

So that just frustrated us even more.

The only thing I have to look forward to, right now, is the results from part 1 of her blood tests. I hope to God there is TRUE answer in there that we can, without a doubt, believe in.

Birthdays, Birthdays, Birthdays!

Strawberry Shortcake Theme

The most amazing 3 months have passed — 3 months of birthdays, birthdays, and more birthdays!

Carli’s 3rd birthday was on June 12th, although we waited to have her birthday as Katie’s was July 13th. Forrest and I realized that it may be more difficult to have two parties so we opted for just one big one. Even though we had planned it, we hadn’t realized just how big it would actually be. Our apartment was packed to the max.

Carli had been watching Strawberry Shortcake a lot lately and I figured it would be such a cute and refreshing summer birthday theme. The birthday cake was made by one of Forrest’s coworkers and oh, how it was so delicious! It was red velvet with cream cheese frosting and fondant. It couldn’t have been more tasty.  I am actually surprisied that a lot of people didn’t eat it at the party. Though, when Forrest brought it to work, it was completely gone by the time he came home. I was rather disappointed as I wanted more.

My Baby Clothes Boutique

The birthday could not have possibly been complete without Carli & Kate’s matching tutu dresses, a gift from the wonderful My Baby Clothes Boutique. It’s important that the birthday girls felt like the party was all about them, and with these wonderful Mud Pie tutu dresses — they knew it was.

I spent months trying to find the perfect matching birthday dresses for my little girls but My Baby Clothes Boutique had just what I was looking for the entire time. They have a wide assortment of clothing available for any of your special occasions. If you have a birthday boy, no sweat — My Baby Clothes Boutique has the most adorable outfits for little boys, too! Think rock and roll and fedoras. Yeah, the boy’s clothing is just that cute.

The girls had such an amazing time at their party. Kate was a little overwhelmed as she is rather timid and quiet, although Carli was right in her element — the life of the party. Carli was so happy to have all her friends at her house that it was everybody’s birthday.

I am so thankful for all our family, all our friends, and of course .. My Baby Clothes Boutique for such a memorable day.

Review & GIVEAWAY: Melissa & Doug Kid’s Trunki (Ends 8/19)

Sponsored by GummyLump.com

Description:

Taking a trip with Trixie (Pink Trunki) means the fun begins when packing! Your child will delight in tucking in favorite clothing and toys for a night at grandma’s or a family vacation.

This is the ideal suitcase, full of child-friendly features for traveling or stay-cations!

Educational Value: A great way to foster independence and self esteem in children. Your child will be able to pack his own things and pull his own suitcase along like the big people do!

Review:

Check out Carli’s reaction when she discovers what is in the box sent from GummyLump.com. Please ignore the vacuum in the back. Having a 3 year old means vacuuming constantly. (I’m sure you know how it is..)

I can honestly say (as you can see) that Carli LOVED her Melissa & Doug Trunki. At first she thought it was a car, which was fine as she could ride around on it. The Trunki is quite sturdy, made of a hard plastic. It is made especially for the loving “touch” of a child. ;)

The Trunki comes with many stickers so that your child can personalize it. You can make it look like an animal or simply make a goofy face! Carli especially loved picking out which face stickers to use to personalize her own Trunki. There are also a few dozen travel patch stickers to place all over the suitcase. Even though I wanted to be very specific where the stickers went, I let Carli have at it. She really enjoyed applying all the stickers herself.

The few issues that I did have with the Trunki are small and once figured out it’s not a big deal. I felt that the side locks were a bit difficult to both install and to use, not making it incredibly child friendly. When trying to figure out how to correctly install and use the side locks, I sent them flying a few times. It was my husband who actually figured out how to correctly install them (I had one upside down) and use the side locks.

Also, although this won’t be an issue with an older child, my 3 year old liked taking off the stickers just as much as she enjoyed putting them on. So a warning for the young ones — don’t expect the stickers to be permanent. I actually think it may have lasted longer had I brushed some modge podge over it to seal the sticker to the surface. Again, it’s not a big deal.

My daughter has had her trunki for a while now and she still uses it for sleepovers at her Memaw & Papa’s house. She frequently stays over as they are two of her most favorite people in the world so it’s great that she has a suitcase that she can pack herself and take with her. I also don’t have to worry about her destroying. It was made to withstand my daughter. That is for sure! Overall, I thought it was very cute and Carli just loves it. We will be using our Trunki for years to come!

Win it!

The Book Cover

Here is my Friday Firsts: To the Nines by Janet Evanovich (ISBN: 978-0312991463) 352 pages.

My  name is Stephanie Plum and I was born and raised in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, where the top male activities are scarfing pastries and pork rinds and growing love handles.

The reason I love this series is that it is full of suspense.. and most obviously, humor. The Stephanie Plum series is so easy to read and get into. Before you know it, you’ll be on #9 and a huge fan. ;)

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Stephanie Plum’s got rent to pay, people shooting at her, and psychos wanting her dead every day of the week (much to the dismay of her mother, her family, the men in her life, the guy who slices meat at the deli…oh, the list goes on). An ordinary person would cave under the pressure.

But hey, she’s from Jersey.

Stephanie Plum may not be the best bounty hunter in beautiful downtown Trenton, but she’s pretty darn good at turning bad situations her way…and she always gets her man. In To The Nines, her cousin Vinnie (who’s also her boss) has posted bail on Samuel Singh, an immigrant who becomes an illegal alien by violating his Visa and extending his stay in the United States. When the elusive Mr. Singh goes missing, Stephanie is on the case. But what she uncovers is far more sinister than anyone imagines and leads to a group of killers who give new meaning to the word “hunter…”

In a race against time that takes her from the Jersey Turnpike to the Vegas strip, Stephanie Plum is on the chase of her life.

Book Cover

Here is my Friday Firsts: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (ISBN: 978-1416955078) 512 pages.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” the bouncer said, folding his arms across his massive chest. He stared down at the boy in the red zip-up jacket and shook his head. “You can’t bring that thing in here.”

This book has completely captivated me from the start. The visuals that Cassandra Clare paints are unlike anything I’ve read before. I feel like I am in a completely different world.

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

The Book Cover

Here is my Friday Firsts: Guantanamo Boy by Anna Perera (ISBN: 978-0807530771) 352 pages.

Sometimes, Khalid thinks as he drags himself home after another boring day at school, I’d rather be anywhere but here.

Knowing the synopsis of the book and where Khalid ends up, I can’t help but think of what wonderful foreshadowing the first sentence is. I wonder if he will come to regret that thought! I will have to read more to find out.

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Innocent until proven guilty? Not here you’re not. Robbed of his childhood, this is one boy’s fictional experience of the supposed war on terror. Khalid, a fifteen-year-old Muslim boy from England, is abducted from Pakistan while on holiday with his family. He is taken to Guantanamo Bay and held without charge, where his hopes and dreams are crushed under the cruellest of circumstances. An innocent denied his freedom at a time when most boys are finding theirs, Khalid tries and fails to understand what’s happening to him.

It’s a Hard Knock Life.. When You’re (Almost) Three!

Bruises & eggs on forehead with swollen nose.

Yes, that is blood on her forehead. Carli looks pretty tame here but it was nothing in comparison to right after the accident; blood covering her face and hands. Poor kid.

Yesterday Carli had her first major fall that resulted in a lot of blood and what we (thought) to be a broken nose. She was scooting on the couch and her leg went over the side and she toppled off the couch and face/head first into the coffee table. I was right there but it happened so fast. Clunk. Clunk. Silence. Then the heart-wrenching scream that will bring any normal mother to tears.

Carli looked up and her face was covered in blood. I looked in her mouth — teeth were fine. The blood was coming from her nose (both nostrils) and she was terrified. I pulled her into a hug and brought her to the kitchen where it didn’t matter if she bled on the tile (or on me for that matter). Seeing that she is only two, it’s very hard to hold a towel to their nose. You know toddlers; they freak out over the littlest thing.

I got her some ice (was unable to get her to let me hold it to her nose). But she calmed down in my arms. I asked her if she wanted me to call Daddy and she cried out, “Noo!! Daddy is at WORK!” (Like I didn’t know this?!) I called him anyway because I was concerned with the amount of bleeding coming from the nose. Now keep in mind I have AT&T. I dial. The call drops. I dial again. It rings and then does nothing. WHAT THE HELL AT&T. Get your shit together. There is nothing more stressful than calling someone in an emergency and your calls drop. It’s like my nightmares come true.

I often dream of trying to call police in an emergency and being unable to reach them. I hate those dreams.

I try calling my mother but AT&T kept dropping those calls, too. I finally get a hold of Forrest and he agrees to meet me at the hospital to get her nose looked at. I get her dressed and cleaned up (and she’s crying this entire time, although no longer screaming thankfully.) I get her sister ready and I am still trying to get a hold of my Mom.  I ended up getting Forrest and we all went to the hospital together.

We saw a nurse practitioner and she ordered XRAYS. The XRAY tech was a woman in her mid-30s who wanted to believe she was in her early 20s (just an observation) — and was incredibly impatient with Carli. We were barely in the room before she wanted to “give up” trying to get a good one of Carli because she moved. You know, had she been compassionate and friendly my daughter would have picked up on it and may have done all right. But I guess that may have been asking too much?

Her XRAY came back clear — no fractures. I guess supposedly because of all the cartilage, it’s actually quite difficult to break a nose this young. Thank Goodness. But, even so, her nose was swollen. By the time we got home if you would ask Carli how her nose or head was, she would say, “It’s better.” I kept asking her only because I loved the way she responded to me. I don’t know where she gets these things. I mean where did she learn “It’s better?” from???!

Carli really amazes me. She can get hurt and yet she doesn’t complain. We never even gave her any tylenol or ibuprofen because she wasn’t showing any signs of being in pain any longer. She just amazes me. I am quite relieved that she was not seriously hurt. It’s hard to imagine that as a toddler, she’s showing less and less fear. Though as a baby she was hesitant to do anything! How quickly our babies grow up.

Here is my Friday Firsts: The Memoir of Marilyn Monroe by Sandi Gelles-Cole (ISBN: 978-0-9786-6213-4) 178 pages.

They say only the good die young and it must be true because I’m still here.

I have to admit, the beginning of this book is rather catchy. How is Gelles-Cole going to spin Marilyn Monroe’s life if she had still been alive?

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Sandi Gelles-Cole imagines the life the screen legend and enduring cultural icon might have led — from the opening scene (below) to her 85th birthday on June 1, 2011.

DRAMA QUEEN June 1, 2011

They say only the good die young and I guess it s true because I m still here. Today is my eighty fifth birthday. During these years I have lived three lives: Before Marilyn, Being Marilyn and After. I created Marilyn Monroe and then men molded her: studios, agents, and husbands. Ever since the night I did not die, I have tried to leave her behind, but wherever I went, the creature followed. I tried to run. I tried changing my name, my country of residence, my hair color, body type, career and sexual preference. I went to college for coursework in Humanities and studied Russian Literature. But there was no escaping her.

The character I created became my own personal monster and devoured me in the 50s, and even after she died I could no more be someone else than I could grow a penis, change my skin color, or stop being a movie star. My so-called death scene is always described the same: My housekeeper, Eunice Murray, finds my wasted, naked body tangled in a sheet, wet from secretions better left unexplained. I am face down with one hand hanging over the telephone. This detail is discussed often; am I answering a call or making one and if I am calling, then whom? But it did not happen that way. I cheated death. . .

Once upon a time there was a girl who was special.

The first sentence in this novel is pretty simply put although it does rise interest in continuing. It has me thinking, “Why is this girl special?” It kind of starts off with the stereotypical fairytale beginning so it makes me wonder if it will follow the same fairytale rules.

Synopsis: (Taken from Goodreads.com)

Once upon a time there was a girl who was special.
This is not her story.
Unless you count the part where I killed her.

Sixteen-year-old Alison has been sectioned in a mental institute for teens, having murdered the most perfect and popular girl at school. But the case is a mystery: no body has been found, and Alison’s condition is proving difficult to diagnose. Alison herself can’t explain what happened: one minute she was fighting with Tori — the next she disintegrated. Into nothing. But that’s impossible. Right?

Hulu+ Hits XBox360 Live .. YAY! #DancesToGlee

The day I have been waiting for, for a long time has arrived — Hulu Plus is now available streaming through the XBOX360 Live! Freaking WEEEEEEEeeee!

You see we don’t have cable. We can’t really justify spending over $100 a month when we have Netflix for movies & TV and Hulu Plus for recent TV for so much as pocket change. Why pay all that extra?

The only issue we had with Hulu Plus was that for the longest time it did not stream through XBOX360 or Apple TV. Watching Hulu Plus as a family was a huge, annoying,  task of hooking up a computer to the TV — and who really wants to do that? Until now, I have only been able to watch Hulu on my iPad (or my iPhone) both of which are only convenient if you are out of the house and with only one person.

But finally XBOX360 brought Hulu Plus to Live. I squeeled with absolute GLEE (har har) when I turned on the XBOX360 this morning and saw that Hulu was available for download. Then I danced a dance around the living room (which caused my husband to walk away — he just doesn’t understand) when I could watch Season 2 of Glee.

I hope I am not the only one who is so very excited this morning. Will you share in my excitement?
