That’s it :)

Here is my Friday Firsts: Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (ISBN: 978-0553386790) 720 pages.

“We should start back,” Gared urged as the woods began to grow dark around them. “The wildlings are dead.”

Fantasy is not my normal genre. I get overwhelmed easily by names I’ve never heard of and lands I have never heard of. In fact, I have started this book a few times, but am finally getting into the groove of reading this novel (which I am enjoying.)

The first sentence definitely drew me in. It caused me to wonder, “Just why are the wildlings dead?”

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Here is the first volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Here is my Friday Firsts: To the Nines by Janet Evanovich (ISBN: 978-0312991463) 352 pages.

My name is Stephanie Plum and I was born and raised in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, where the top male activities are scarfing pastries and pork rinds and growing love handles. The pastry and pork rind scarfing I’ve seen firsthand.

You have to love Janet Evanovich. She really catches you from the beginning so it makes starting the novels easy peasy, which is great because I do not like starting novels. I expected to be caught from the very first sentence.

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius—and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn’t know what he’s taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit.  These aren’t the fairies of bedtime stories; these fairies are armed and dangerous.

Artemis thinks he has them right where he wants them…but then they stop playing by the rules.

Teaser:

How does one describe Artemis Fowl? Various psychiatrists have tried and failed.

I have heard of the Artemis Fowl books for years. But as of lately, I have heard from a lot of other book bloggers that it is one of their favorite series so I decided I would at least try it out. So far, the first sentence definitely draws me in!

Have you heard of Artemis Fowl? Does it live up to the hype?

Here is my Friday Firsts: City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare (ISBN: 978-1416914297) 464 pages.

The formidable glass-and-steel structure rose from its position on Front Street like a glittering needle threading the sky.

The sentence, although well written, did not immediately draw me in. In fact, I had started this book almost immediately after I finished City of Bones, which was a while ago. But  for some reason, I couldn’t get into it. I pushed through, though and am currently enjoying my read. :)

City of Ashes

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

Part 1 of Green Living: Our Family Garden

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Whitney Farms for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have wanted a garden for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, for a while, we weren't in the position or location to make it happen. Then we bought this house — with a huge backyard and it was just asking for us to finally start our family garden.

We really wanted to be as green as possible. We wanted to use recycled materials (when possible), which we were able to! We had shopped on craigslist and managed to score a cedar wood pallet (for FREE, might I add) to which we turned into a raised plant bed. (More information to come on how to make an upcycled raised plant bed, later.)

When we went to a big chain store to get our soil, we were hard pressed to find what we truly wanted, organic soil. Relunctantly, we picked up a well-known brand name soil starter and I am still upset about it. It's not organic! Then, I was introduced to Whitney Farms® , who makes organic gardening possible. I will be using Whitney Farms® from here on out, that is for sure!

Whitney Farms Organic Planting Soil

  • Contains kelp & alfalfa meal

  • Grow plants up to twice as big versus topsoil

  • Naturally occurring microbial activity enhances nutrient availability

Sounds pretty amazing, right? Luckily we hadn't purchased plant food, yet, because I wanted to do some research first on finding organic plant food. Luckily Whitney Farms® has just what I need for our family garden! Eek!

Organic Plant Food

I don't have to worry about finding a plant food specifically for vegetables, as the Whitney Farms® organic plant food is all purpose — whew. The plant food is specially formulated to help my plants grow and thrive — organically. The products, such as their organic soil are easily to apply with little to no dust or manure odor.

Right now, when you sign up at their website to receive special promotions and coupons, you can receive a special $3off coupon to try their products. I know that I definitely will. :)

For Memory’s Sake: All About Carli, Age 3.

Carli, April 2012

My kids are fabulous. Of course, every parents think their kids are fabulous, but it’s absolutely true about Carli & Katelyn. They are at such an interesting age, but some day I am going to look back and want to remember certain things and who knows if I will be able to?

And so here I go, writing things down for memory’s sake.

Carli – Age 3 (46 months)

Birthdate: June 12th, 2008

Favorite Food: Yogurt, fruit, & burritos

Carli will eat yogurt multiple times a day. She absolutely adores it and eats the Activia yogurt. Her favorite flavors are strawberry and vanilla, although she will eat any of it. She particularly likes eating with her silver Micky Mouse spoon.

Whenever Forrest brings home food, and before he gets in the door, she asks, “Did you bring me home a burrito?!” It used to be rather messy, but she’s getting much better with her yogurt and burrito eating endeavors, and now it takes very little wiping up. (The table, however, is another story.)

Favorite Person: Memaw & her dance teacher (Miss Kailee, who Carli calls “Mr. Kailee”)

In the fall, Carli started dance class. Although she’s probably not the most coordinated child in her class, she has a great time (and that is what’s most important!) I really lucked out with her teachers. It started out with just Miss Kailee, but when the class kept growing, they added Miss Trissi (sp?), too. They are both wonderful with her.

Carli was blessed with attention issues. Her father had ADD/HD as a child (was medicated, a problem to teachers, etc.) and I developed adult onset ADD in my late teens. Having ADD is seriously difficult and frustrating, but even worse — for teachers, dealing with a child who has ADD, well — they are Angel teachers in my mind. It takes a lot of patience (and often more repeating then you care to do). Her teachers are very patient with her and do a great job of redirecting her attention, moving her if she is fooling around, but meanwhile making her feel that she is so e-ffin’ wonderful. I’ve been a teacher, but now as a Mom, I realize how important that is and I am so super happy that her first experience with teachers is such a positive one.

Also, no matter how many times I correct her, Miss Kailee is referred to by Carli as Mr. Kailee. We know she can say Miss, but for some reason, it’s always Mr. Luckily Kailee finds it adorable and no one feels the need to correct her (except us — haha).

Fears: The vacuum cleaner (and sudden loud noises), The dark, going back home after Memaw and Papa’s house, but mostly the vacuum cleaner.

Carli loves her Memaw and Papa’s house so much that she doesn’t exactly treat us kindly when we pick her up. In fact, sometimes she doesn’t even want to talk to me on the phone, for fear that just the sound of me means I am picking her up. When we walk into my parents house to pick her up, she usually starts crying or running away. If we’re lucky, she just says, “No, I am staying at Memaw’s house.”

Makes us feel so loved. (not) Thanks, Carli! She’s fine once we start driving away, but geesh — for someone who gets so much attention and affection at home, she sure knows how to make someone question their parenting.

On another, more funnier note, Carli is incredibly scared of the vacuum cleaner. Even if it is off and unplugged, she will go out of her way to not go near it. I find myself being the best Mom ever by threatening to turn on the vacuum if she does something she’s not supposed to. (Hah?) ;) Hey — it works!

Every day Carli will ask, usually at least twice, if I plan on vacuuming. I always have to tell her when I am about to turn it on, as not to startle her. Otherwise, she is in a puddle of screaming tears. You would think exposure therapy would be helpful, but it doesn’t work — I vacuum almost every day and she is still terrified of the vacuum.

Her fear is so bad that my parents have to make sure to vacuum prior to her staying the weekend with them AND hide the vacuum away in a room. She knows exactly where it is and God forbid it shows it’s ugly, sucking, cleaning, face or she will let you know that she is not happy.

Interests:

Prince Phillip (from Sleeping Beauty), performing magic tricks, going to the park, online preschool, and getting her nails done. (Just to name a few.)

Carli is pretty easy to please. She’ll play anything with anyone. She loves playing in the dirt and running around and you can pretty much get her to go anywhere and do anything — and she’s happy to do it. She kind of reminds me of my friend, Iara — in a way. Iara was always up for anything and that is something I always loved about her. Carli is the same way. :)

Quotes:

“Good Morning! It’s a beautiful sunny day!”

“I want to hold you!” or “I want to cuddle you!” (When she wants you to do these things to her)

After Kate’s hospital visit, I am left thinking, “What Now?”

My beautiful little girl

Tuesday was Kate’s hospital procedure. I wasn’t looking forward to my tiny little girl being put under anesthesia but I was looking forward to getting some answers. Kate was scheduled for an endoscopy by her gastroenterologist and a ton of blood work ordered by both her gastroenterologist doctor and her endocrinologist doctor.

I was instructed not to let Kate have any food after midnight as her procedure would be at 8am and it was best if she had not eaten for about 8 hours prior. Kate went to bed at 8:30 and I tried as hard as I could to get her to stay up later so I could pump her full of breast milk here and t here but she had enough of awake time and her little body demanded sleep.

Smiling at herself in the camera phone.

She woke up around 4:30am hungry, and normally by then I would get up with her since 8:30-4:30 is 8 hours and that is a long time for a breastfed child to not eat. But I could only avoid her at all costs. If she saw me or heard me, the tantrums would start. The look in her eyes would say, “I am hungry! Why are you not feeding me??!”

We left for the hospital as we were to be there by 7am. We were there by about 6:40 and Kate was beyond cranky. Luckily, I thought, we would only have to deal with this for another hour and then she would be under and not feel the pain of hunger or thirst. It felt inhumane, denying my child something so basic as food & drink when they not only NEED it to survive, but Kate’s tiny and needs every calorie she can get her hands on that agrees with her system.

7 came and went as did 8. The receptionist had crossed off our names but claimed he didn’t see us. Um, what? I looked at the sign in sheet and it said I was there and it had been crossed off. What the heck? “I know there is not much you can do but it has been way too long since she has eaten and she is really hungry…” I said, frustrated to hear my 17 month old cry with frustration. Even a year and a half later, I grow incredibly agitated and frustrated when my child cries and I cannot soothe her. It’s motherly instinct, you know. You hear the cries of your child and you want to soothe them. You NEED to soothe them and anyone that stands in the way — so help them, God!

We were finally called back to registration, and then the waiting room where Kate was put into her hospital gown and overly large socks. Now, keep in mind that this was a pediatric doctor and she was at the hospital that had the Disney Pavillion! Now why on earth are they not prepared to have baby-sized hospital gear? Is this common?

Me and my Sweetie Petitie.

But, anyway– Kate started perking up when she was being given a lot of attention. The anesthesiologist, Dr. London, was incredibly gentle and kind with Kate. Now, if you know Kate, you know how completely opposite in personality she is from her very outgoing and friendly big sister, Carli. Kate will sit back, observe and you can’t always tell what she’s thinking. She is, though, very animated with her eyes. She gives death stares like no other. Even so, the doctors and nurses found her endearing and adorable and she really liked that. She would shoot a few smiles here and there. It was also nice and reassuring to hear (as a parent) that they were behaving so well. Either they were lying to me (because I could have sworn she was being one nasty toddler) or I expect to much from my children. Either way, I appreciated that they made me feel like no matter how she was behaving, they truly liked her.

Forrest really wanted to go back with Kate. When it comes to our girls and their illnesses, he really steps up as Papa Bear. In fact, he tends to be way more motherly during their illnesses than I am. When he knew Kate was to be put under, he really wanted to be with her. I could sense the tension and the anxiety he had, and she wouldn’t let anyone but me hold her — so we agreed that I would go back with her. We didn’t want any more anxiety than there was.

So, I went back with Kate and held her the entire time. I sat on her bed, cuddled her, and they applied the gas mask. I felt her body grow heavy and she began to relax. Within a minute, she was sleeping heavily. They picked her up and laid her on the bed. It was surreal. I have never seen her sleep so heavily. (She’s not a good sleeper). I left the room and went to join my husband in the waiting room.

The wait was quick. Maybe 20 minutes? It felt like no time at all and they were calling us back to go be with Kate in recovery.

We had to get a picture, first.

She was still sleeping when we got there. Unlike adults, they weren’t yelling in her ear to wake up. They were quiet and taking her vitals and let us be the ones to wake her up. So, I woke her up with gentle kisses and whispers in her ear and gently rubbing her arm. I woke her up the way I would have wanted to wake up if I was her. It’s terrifying waking up after surgery/procedures when you were put under. I’ve been in that position twice, and the last thing I wanted was for her to be startled and confused.

It took her a few minutes to wake up. She would wake up enough to want me to hold her but she would fall back asleep. It was like that for maybe 20 minutes. The nurses and doctors said that she was waking up “really good!” though, so I wasn’t worried.

The doctor came in and told us that he was sorry but they couldn’t do the bloodwork. The lab had sent adult-sized blood viles and equipment, rather than the pediatric, child-sized and they were unable to get the blood work while she was under. I was visibly upset but kept my cool. The bloodwork I wanted even more than the endoscopy. The bloodwork included metabolic conditions, thyroid, growth hormone levels, etc. My gut has always told me that the bloodwork would have the answers so when he said they couldn’t do it, my heart sank.

Supposedly it was the most mad he has ever been and really took it out on the lab employees. I would never have known as the doctor was soft spoken to us. But, anyway — he told us that there is a sphincter from her esophagus to her stomach that closes after eating and it helps keep the food down. I guess supposedly its not closed as a newborn (hence spit up) but it matures as they get older (around 6 months of age). But hers was completely open. It is like a cup without a lid. When it becomes overly full or agitated, the contents will spill out and that explains her random vomiting episodes after eating. He seems to think that it “explains” her FPIES and “this is it” but I know better.

FPIES doesn’t happen 10-15 minutes after eating. Not usually, anyhow. Kate’s FPIES episodes happen anywhere from 2 hours to 4 hours after ingestion. That is well beyond the normal digestion period. He said this should explain her not wanting to eat and I had to remind him multiple times that her appetite is NOT an issue. She would eat all day if you let her.

By now it was around 10:30 and Kate still had not eaten anything. When I expressed this, he THEN told us that she could have eaten 4 hours prior to her procedure and not 8 — I was mad. As her procedure didn’t happen until about 9:30am, I could have fed her at 5:30 that morning! We would have had a MUCH happier baby, then. It just added to the frustration I was feeling.

Afterwards, we went to the lab to get some bloodwork done. They had a hard time, for some reason, because they were getting it out of an IV rather than the way they normally take blood. But Kate was good the entire time and never showed any discomfort in what they were doing. It didn’t seem that was over, though. They could only get 10mL of blood from her, because she was only 16lbs. (Yes, she actually weighed at 16lbs that morning!!)

But, anyhow — she recovered nicely. She was herself a few hours later and we doted on her and held her and thanked her for being in our life and being such a good sport, regardless of not understanding what was going on.

Unfortunately, I don’t feel like I have any more answers. I had figured as much that she couldn’t hold her stomach contents in as well as others, but her body is just not as advanced as others her age. I did, however, lose confidence in my doctor a bit. He said he wanted to possibly start her on antacids since it was a little red from stomach acid and somehow that will close the hole? I kept asking but he just kept repeating a bunch of nothing. How is antacids going to magically close the stomach?

Plus we really don’t want to pump her body full of medications without fixing the issue. He also said that he would probably not scope her again unless the medication didn’t help. Okay, well the medication would just mask the symptoms of reflux, reflux that doesn’t really happen much anymore. But it’s not going to prevent random vomiting episodes and how is it REALLY going to close the hole. Unless he did scope her again, how would he even know if it closed or not? He wouldn’t.

So that just frustrated us even more.

The only thing I have to look forward to, right now, is the results from part 1 of her blood tests. I hope to God there is TRUE answer in there that we can, without a doubt, believe in.

My Teaser:

The Death Cure by James Dashner (ISBN: 978-0385738774)

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Thomas knows that Wicked can’t be trusted, but they say the time for lies is over, that they’ve collected all they can from the Trials and now must rely on the Gladers, with full memories restored, to help them with their ultimate mission. It’s up to the Gladers to complete the blueprint for the cure to the Flare with a final voluntary test.
What Wicked doesn’t know is that something’s happened that no Trial or Variable could have foreseen. Thomas has remembered far more than they think. And he knows that he can’t believe a word of what Wicked says.
The time for lies is over. But the truth is more dangerous than Thomas could ever imagine.
Will anyone survive the Death Cure?

Teaser:

“How many of you are there?” Thomas asked her. “Are there more coming?” She didn’t respond at first, but Minho leaned forward until his gun was actually touching her cheek.

Birthdays, Birthdays, Birthdays!

Strawberry Shortcake Theme

The most amazing 3 months have passed — 3 months of birthdays, birthdays, and more birthdays!

Carli’s 3rd birthday was on June 12th, although we waited to have her birthday as Katie’s was July 13th. Forrest and I realized that it may be more difficult to have two parties so we opted for just one big one. Even though we had planned it, we hadn’t realized just how big it would actually be. Our apartment was packed to the max.

Carli had been watching Strawberry Shortcake a lot lately and I figured it would be such a cute and refreshing summer birthday theme. The birthday cake was made by one of Forrest’s coworkers and oh, how it was so delicious! It was red velvet with cream cheese frosting and fondant. It couldn’t have been more tasty.  I am actually surprisied that a lot of people didn’t eat it at the party. Though, when Forrest brought it to work, it was completely gone by the time he came home. I was rather disappointed as I wanted more.

My Baby Clothes Boutique

The birthday could not have possibly been complete without Carli & Kate’s matching tutu dresses, a gift from the wonderful My Baby Clothes Boutique. It’s important that the birthday girls felt like the party was all about them, and with these wonderful Mud Pie tutu dresses — they knew it was.

I spent months trying to find the perfect matching birthday dresses for my little girls but My Baby Clothes Boutique had just what I was looking for the entire time. They have a wide assortment of clothing available for any of your special occasions. If you have a birthday boy, no sweat — My Baby Clothes Boutique has the most adorable outfits for little boys, too! Think rock and roll and fedoras. Yeah, the boy’s clothing is just that cute.

The girls had such an amazing time at their party. Kate was a little overwhelmed as she is rather timid and quiet, although Carli was right in her element — the life of the party. Carli was so happy to have all her friends at her house that it was everybody’s birthday.

I am so thankful for all our family, all our friends, and of course .. My Baby Clothes Boutique for such a memorable day.

Description:

Taking a trip with Trixie (Pink Trunki) means the fun begins when packing! Your child will delight in tucking in favorite clothing and toys for a night at grandma’s or a family vacation.

This is the ideal suitcase, full of child-friendly features for traveling or stay-cations!

Educational Value: A great way to foster independence and self esteem in children. Your child will be able to pack his own things and pull his own suitcase along like the big people do!

Review:

Check out Carli’s reaction when she discovers what is in the box sent from GummyLump.com. Please ignore the vacuum in the back. Having a 3 year old means vacuuming constantly. (I’m sure you know how it is..)

I can honestly say (as you can see) that Carli LOVED her Melissa & Doug Trunki. At first she thought it was a car, which was fine as she could ride around on it. The Trunki is quite sturdy, made of a hard plastic. It is made especially for the loving “touch” of a child. ;)

The Trunki comes with many stickers so that your child can personalize it. You can make it look like an animal or simply make a goofy face! Carli especially loved picking out which face stickers to use to personalize her own Trunki. There are also a few dozen travel patch stickers to place all over the suitcase. Even though I wanted to be very specific where the stickers went, I let Carli have at it. She really enjoyed applying all the stickers herself.

The few issues that I did have with the Trunki are small and once figured out it’s not a big deal. I felt that the side locks were a bit difficult to both install and to use, not making it incredibly child friendly. When trying to figure out how to correctly install and use the side locks, I sent them flying a few times. It was my husband who actually figured out how to correctly install them (I had one upside down) and use the side locks.

Also, although this won’t be an issue with an older child, my 3 year old liked taking off the stickers just as much as she enjoyed putting them on. So a warning for the young ones — don’t expect the stickers to be permanent. I actually think it may have lasted longer had I brushed some modge podge over it to seal the sticker to the surface. Again, it’s not a big deal.

My daughter has had her trunki for a while now and she still uses it for sleepovers at her Memaw & Papa’s house. She frequently stays over as they are two of her most favorite people in the world so it’s great that she has a suitcase that she can pack herself and take with her. I also don’t have to worry about her destroying. It was made to withstand my daughter. That is for sure! Overall, I thought it was very cute and Carli just loves it. We will be using our Trunki for years to come!

Win it!

The Book Cover

Here is my Friday Firsts: To the Nines by Janet Evanovich (ISBN: 978-0312991463) 352 pages.

My  name is Stephanie Plum and I was born and raised in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, where the top male activities are scarfing pastries and pork rinds and growing love handles.

The reason I love this series is that it is full of suspense.. and most obviously, humor. The Stephanie Plum series is so easy to read and get into. Before you know it, you’ll be on #9 and a huge fan. ;)

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Stephanie Plum’s got rent to pay, people shooting at her, and psychos wanting her dead every day of the week (much to the dismay of her mother, her family, the men in her life, the guy who slices meat at the deli…oh, the list goes on). An ordinary person would cave under the pressure.

But hey, she’s from Jersey.

Stephanie Plum may not be the best bounty hunter in beautiful downtown Trenton, but she’s pretty darn good at turning bad situations her way…and she always gets her man. In To The Nines, her cousin Vinnie (who’s also her boss) has posted bail on Samuel Singh, an immigrant who becomes an illegal alien by violating his Visa and extending his stay in the United States. When the elusive Mr. Singh goes missing, Stephanie is on the case. But what she uncovers is far more sinister than anyone imagines and leads to a group of killers who give new meaning to the word “hunter…”

In a race against time that takes her from the Jersey Turnpike to the Vegas strip, Stephanie Plum is on the chase of her life.

Book Cover

Here is my Friday Firsts: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (ISBN: 978-1416955078) 512 pages.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” the bouncer said, folding his arms across his massive chest. He stared down at the boy in the red zip-up jacket and shook his head. “You can’t bring that thing in here.”

This book has completely captivated me from the start. The visuals that Cassandra Clare paints are unlike anything I’ve read before. I feel like I am in a completely different world.

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
