Laptop Battery Depot Saved My Computer

Need a new laptop battery?

I am sitting here in bed, recovering from my surgery on Friday. While siting in bed with a laptop doesn’t seem all that special, it is. You see — for almost a year my Dell Inspiron laptop battery decided to quit on me. I am guessing it was a bit tired from overworking on the job. (Can’t say I blame it.) It no longer wished to charge — at all.

Not having a working laptop battery meant that I had to stay plugged into the wall and any time I moved my computer ever so slightly and the plug came lose from my computer, it would completely shut down. That was not an ideal situation when I was in the middle of responding to an email or writing a blog entry. Although I am pretty good about frequently saving my work, it takes a while for my computer to reboot and takes away valuable writing time. Even so, what good is a laptop if you can’t carry it with you?

When many people are faced with computer issues such as mine, they are told that to fix this issue they are going to have to completely replace their laptop batteries. If you’re like me, you’ve looked into it and seen how pricy that can be. Many don’t want to spend so much replacing a battery when they can just get a whole new computer. However, as I was researching laptop battery replacements I discovered Laptop Battery Depot. Surprisingly, their prices were absolutely affordable. The nagging feeling of possibly retiring my laptop began to dissipate as I started looking into Laptop Battery Depot.

My experience with Laptop Battery Depot was truly an amazing one. Not only was it easy to figure out what model battery I needed to fix my computer via the website but their customer service was phenomenal. Together we confirmed exactly the Dell laptop battery I needed for my older computer (just to make sure). My order was placed Friday afternoon and it arrived with the mail on Monday. I couldn’t believe how quickly my battery (and new charger) arrived.

Even though my computer is older (built in 2006), it almost feels brand new in regards to not feeling like a prisoner to the wall. Besides finding a laptop battery from a company that had great customer service and quick shipment, I also felt the batteries were incredibly affordable! The cost for my replacement battery was just $89.95, as opposed to over $100 in places around the web, including eBay! I even got a replacement charger for just $29.95. By far the best prices I’ve seen on the web!

So, if you are like me and feel that you’re a prisoner to your wall — check out Laptop Battery Depot. They have many other brands available including:

  • Acer
  • Mac
  • Asus
  • Compaq
  • Dell
  • Gateway
  • HP
  • IBM
  • Sony
  • Toshiba

You’ll find a great deal and you’ll be relieved of having to spend the extra money elsewhere — whether on an expensive new computer or an overpriced battery. If you want to find the best deal possible, then I definitely recommend Laptop Battery Depot. They saved my computer and I am sure they will save yours, too.

Stumbling Saturday: Best Finds for Writers of Week 5/28

Because of StumbleUpon, I have found some great sites. The sites that I am focusing on this week are websites geared towards helping authors/writers. I have found a LOT of great sites that give amazing writing tips and I just had to share! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Stumble Upon Loves Writers

  1. http://www.writingbisz.blogspot.com/ – The Writing Bisz supplies some great tips. The first article that I saw was about creating believable characters and I definitely think that it’s great advice that many can benefit from. I liked the idea that they gave in spending time with your character; writing a short biography. The more you know your character, the more they come to life.
  2. http://www.writersdigest.com/WritingPrompts/ – Not only does Writer’s Digest give you writing prompts but you can post your practice responses in the forum. I had no idea that this community even existed. The first one I see currently is about pretending a loved one has passed and writing about them. I guess writing a eulogy. Call me superstitious but I refuse to participate in something like that. Just makes me too sad to think about it. It also reminds me of that one episode on Everybody Loves Raymond when Ray writes his Father’s eulogy. Yes, Ray was a writer and he was simply writing it for inspiration, I guess. It must work.  If that writing prompt is too morbid for you, there are many others.
  3. http://saleshq.monster.com/training/articles/3064-11-stupidest-writing-mistakes I admit, I had to go “huh?” on a few of these tips but honestly, a lot of them are just common sense. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don’t understand a lick of grammar. I think this article will at least clue a few of those people in.
  4. http://www.writingforward.com/writing-tips/got-writers-block-23-writing-tips-that-dont-involve-writing Are you suffering from a horrible case of writers block? Not inspired but desperately want to write? I LOVE this website and their suggestions for writers. You don’t necessarily need to WRITE to practice writing. (Yes, you heard me right!) Just check it out and be inspired.
  5. http://bookcoverarchive.com/ If you decide to go the Indie route and self publish, you’re going to want to invest in a professional cover designer. (Personally, I am sick of all those crappy covers I see out there!) This website showcases book covers and the designers that designed them. Not only is it nice knowing who does the covers but just seeing book covers always seems to inspire me a little bit. How about you?
  6. http://www.underdown.org/ This website has an extensive list of articles geared specifically towards authors and illustrators who wish to get into the children’s book market; the common mistakes, pitfalls, and how to stand out.
  7. http://www.thinkingandmaking.com/view/more-tips-for I laughed. Wonderfully written tips for writing well.
  8. http://ghostwriterdad.com/stop-boring-your-readers-by-doing-this/ This blogger-Dad is just funny but he sure knows what he is talking about!
  9. http://www.aliventures.com/8-writing-secrets/ Shh! Don’t tell anyone about these 8 writing secrets!
  10. http://www.copyblogger.com/better-writer/ — I like the “use self-imposed word limits” one. When you know you can only use so many words, you really begin to think about which words are most important and which words are pointless and can be discarded. This site had a ton of other great tips that are worth checking out.

Those are some of my favorite finds this week. What were yours?

Excuse the messy hair.

We have had the pleasure of working with My Baby Clothes Boutique again. (You can read our previous blog entry here.) I really wanted to put up this boutique rave a while ago but due to many unforeseen (hospital visits, mastitis, death in the family, etc) circumstances, the giveaway was a bit delayed. Can Authors REALLY Handle the Truth? #Book Reviews

“Sometimes reality has a way of sneaking up and biting us in the ass. And when the dam bursts, all you can do is swim. The world of pretend is a cage, not a cocoon. We can only lie to ourselves for so long. We are tired, we are scared, denying it doesn’t change the truth. Sooner or later we have to put aside our denial and face the world. Head on, guns blazing. De Nile. It’s not just a river in Egypt, it’s a freakin’ ocean. So how do you keep from drowning in it?” – Meredith Grey “Grey’s Anatomy”

If you are in the book blogging world, you are probably familiar with the infamous Jacqueline Howett who went postal on a book blogger (and still, to this day, refuses to accept responsibility). If you read her most current blog entry you will see a quick “apology” if you can even call it an apology and then she goes back to pointing fingers at the blogger, blaming his review on being “new” to the blog world.

I wonder if she knows how to pronounce the world denial?

But is Howett completely to blame for her outburst? What about all the people who have read her work beforehand and did not want to spare her the ill feelings and give her the honest truth? How much of her denial was based on our (the book reviewers) inability to be honest with the book we have read? Are we really helping the author by lying to them because we are too empathic to their feelings?

Recently I decided I would be honest with my book reviews; honest in the sense that I would put up a review no matter what. Even if I did not like it, I would say so rather than not review the book at all. For the longest time if I did not like a book, and it was that bad, I would simply put it down and move on to the next book. I couldn’t face the idea of hurting someone’s feelings. But then I thought, why exactly am I reviewing books? What is even the point in reviewing books if not to be completely honest about how you feel; the good books and the bad?

Publishers and authors alike email me almost daily with the request for my thoughts on their books.  I probably have a good few dozen books in my TBR pile awaiting review.  But this has me wondering, are authors really looking for my thoughts or are they just looking for reassurance that they have talent and their work is phenomenal?  But that really takes away the whole point of a book reviewer. Am I right or am I wrong?

Believe me, I hate writing negative reviews. Each time I dislike a book, I get this heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach and think, “Oh no..” Being a Pisces, I am incredibly sensitive and I hate the idea that what I have to say will hurt someone’s feelings and put self doubt in their minds. No one wants to feel unworthy or doubtful and frankly it absolutely sucks to know that you have to do it to someone on purpose. I have to remind myself, though, that it’s to help the author. The truth, whether it hurts or not, is told so that they may hear it and learn from it and take what they will to better their craft. Passing off their inadequate work as perfection does not help an author better themselves, but only pushes them further into the pits of denial.

Recently I reviewed a book by Megan Bostic titled Never Eighteen. Never Eighteen was the story of a 17 year old named Austin who was dying of cancer and wanted one last chance to remedy some relationships that have soured over the course of his short life. While the synopsis was interesting, the story itself was completely flawed and in my review I was blunt with saying exactly what bugged me about the story. After all, I received the book to do just that; to give my thoughts. No one said that I had to give a positive review. In fact, I am pretty sure that bartering for a positive review with gifts/products and/or cash gifts is illegal now. As an ethical blogger, I vowed to abide by such rules.

I did not like Never Eighteen and I said so. Bostic wasn’t a fan of the review, no doubt. (You can read her thoughts and feelings on the subject here). Her thoughts and feelings on the subject didn’t bother me. But her deleting my comment in response to her entry did. I simply told her that although my language may have been harsh or blunt or “unprofessional” as she states, I had to remind her that this is a personal blog. Had I written a review for People Magazine or the NY Times, the entire tone and language would have been professional and analytical. But Well-Read Reviews is not People Magazine or the NY Times. It’s a blog that I started to discuss what I was reading. Unless I am getting paid to right a review, I do not feel the need to censor myself in any way, shape, or form. When I write my reviews, I write the thoughts as they come to mind.

That being said, my comment to Bostic on her blog entry wasn’t an attack in any way. I simply apologized to Bostic for having to say what I had to say in my review and that her feelings were be hurt by it. I told her again, in an easier pill to swallow, what I found flawed by her novel and I hope that she could take from it and learn from it. Instead of responding, she deleted my comment. What is the purpose of deleting a comment not made in spite, but to only further your own denial on not wanting to face the truth? She either did not want to listen what I had to say, the person reviewing her book, or she didn’t want others to be influenced by what I had to say (or both).

But as Bostic states in her entry, people need to pick up the book for themselves and make their own choices. (I cannot agree, more.) However, she has to be aware that just because she is published does not mean that her work is perfection. Her books are then sent out for review and therefore when her books are out there in circulation, the chances that people will not like it increases. Don’t pass off negative reviews to be anything but a learning experience. Every negative review has something to learn from.

In regards to Never Eighteen, you see, Bostic failed  to follow my 3 Golden Rules (which any author can learn from):

Top 3 Mistakes Authors Make

1. Create an unlikeable first person character. Not all characters are meant to be liked, but if an author is going to write a story in first person, the character needs to be easy to relate to. If I cannot feel compassion and empathy and feel as one with the character, then the author has no reason for writing in first person.

When a first person character is unlikeable, the reader is more likely to separate themselves from the character and therefore the story. Therefore the character needs to be someone to root for and cannot be so flawed and so dramatic that their emotions and actions are beyond anything  a normal reader would think, feel, and do. One of the reasons Austin from Never Eighteen was so unlikeable was how he treated the people in his life he supposedly loved.  He supposedly loved his best friend, Kaylee, yet none of his actions leading up to their coming together really expressed that or indicated any sort of romantic feel.

When describing Kaylee, I needed to feel what Austin felt. However I felt no passion for Kaylee. Instead I was confused. I knew that I, the main character, was supposed to love her — but why leave her in the car stop after stop and make her wait without explaining? If Austin really loved Kaylee, he would have brought her into his world and explained what he had to do and leave it up to her to show character enough to decide whether or not to accompany him into the homes of the people to be visited. He needed to show her respect by not keeping her in the dark.

Through out the book Austin puts himself  in scenarios that were completely selfish and most people would like to believe that they aren’t comparable to someone so selfish. I didn’t like Austin, and therefore, it was quite difficult for the book to pull me in completely.

2. Use the same voice for all of your characters. I hate when authors do this, but I don’t think they necessarily know they are doing this. However to me this indicates that a character was not particularly well thought out. While writing their novel they really need to pay attention to their characters. What makes each character different and unique (besides the way they look, their gender, or their name.) It seems a lot of emphasis are placed on details, rather than personality and the way they speak.  In my opinion, as a reader, personality is most important.

Most of the time I do not care how a person looks (I leave that up to my imagination) and most of the time I cannot remember if they are brunette or blonde or what their last name is. But I do remember the way they spoke and their personality as whole. However when these characters all speak the same, it brings down the story. It really does, and yet so many authors do it. Kaylee and Austin in Never Eighteen talked the same and their dialogue read as if they were talking to themselves. There was nothing particularly special about either of their (lack) of personalities.

What if Kaylee had been from North Carolina, or somewhere in the southern states? Maybe she speaks with a slight southern drawl. Maybe she’s from upstate New York or Chicago and pronounces my name like, “Eel-ison”. Either way, making her unique and set apart from the main character is important. What kind of things did she dislike in a person? Does she get overly anal about doing things a certain way? Does she bite off more than she can chew? What about her sense of humor? What makes Kaylee special and worthy of Austin’s love? But keep in mind, Kaylee can’t be perfect, because who is?

Authors really need to put in a lot of thought into their characters. Their voices each need to be different and unique because, well, we all are.

3. Overly Predictable – There is nothing wrong with being a little predictable (hello foreshadowing) but when a book is overly predictable to the point when it holds no surprise, then we have a problem.

The moment Austin wanted into his friend’s (I think her name was Alli) house, the way she was described I knew she had some sort of drug habit. The way their conversation took place I knew what was going to happen and how Austin was going to fly in there and “save” his friend with his 5 minute speech.  You know what? Be realistic — some people just cannot be saved. And supposedly this girl was all full of life before and yadda yadda. Then she was raped. Then she turned to drugs. It was just too predictable.

Another example is when Austin visits this kid with “nerdy glasses” (or something like that). Just from Bostics description alone, I knew what was to come. I knew Austin was a former bully coming to make amends. Why did I have to know all this? What is the point in pulling the reader through this just to retell what they already know; something I can gauge just by reading the “memory” of the kid? And the fact that he was a bully just further annoyed me with Rule #1: Making the character unlikeable.

You know what would have been unpredictable — if there was a bigger thread to tie between his visits. What did all of these people have in common besides Austin? Usually a character is brought in for a purpose bigger than what the reader initially believes. Why were THESE people visited out of all the many he probably pissed off in his life time?

And then another predictable thing happens, he dies. (But you knew that, or did you?)

I hate writing negative reviews but honestly — who am I helping by not saying anything? Who are we as book bloggers helping when we tell our readers a book was good when we really couldn’t have cared less about it but felt obligated to find SOMETHING nice to say about it (and leaving out anything that would do a disservice to the book?)

If you’re a book blogger — be honest. Maybe if we had all been honest with ourselves then the Twilight series wouldn’t have gone viral. Let’s nip bad literature in the butt and not enable it. Think about it.

If you’re an author, don’t pass off a review as insignificant just because your friends, family, and publisher all agree that your book was amazing. Think about their motives and their relationship to you. Think about how that creates bias in their review.

If you want someone to be honest with you, you need to have an unbias reviewer give you feedback prior to publication. Heck, I have no problem working with authors about critiquing their work beforehand. I vow to always tell the author the truth about how I feel while reading their novel but the question remains, can they really handle it?

The Top 10 WordPress Plugins I Can’t Live Without (And You Shouldn’t Either!)

I guess you could say I am a WordPress plugin hoarder. I love checking out what new WordPress plugins are available and finding out how I can implement them on my site. It’s always disappointing when I find a seemingly great plugin only to find out that it’s broken or not compatible with my current updated WordPress version. (Talk about GAH!) Needless to say, I have found a few plugins that I just can’t do without (and I really think no blogger should!)

The Top 10 WordPress Plugins I Can’t Live Without:

These are listed in no particular order.

And the Winner Is… I think that for all giveaway blogs, this is a must. There is no need to count votes or imput names or randomize anything. You simply let the plugin do the work and it selects a winner at random from the comments on the entries that you mark as contests. The plugin tells you the winner’s email address and the winning post. If you’re doing any kind of randomized contest on your blog, this is THE contest plugin to have.

CommentLuv I feel that it’s important that a commenter gets some sort of feel good prize for taking the time out of their day for commenting on my website. CommentLuv links to the commenter’s most recent blog entry on their own blog, if they include their blog URL in the URL spot when they comment. Not only does it give them a little publicity, but it helps me (as a blog) to get to know my commenters.

Do Follow What is the huge thing with creating “no-follow” tags on everything? Did you know it comes standard? That means when you link to a website or a commenter leaves a link, it doesn’t count towards their Google PageRank? I make my comments all DO Follow with this plugin. Though because of this, I do moderate all my comments. First time commenters are held in moderation. When I feel they are not spam, then they are approved to be able to have their comments automatically. I think this is also a good incentive for people to leave comments, knowing that when they do, it counts towards their page rank.

Exclude Pages Have you ever wanted to create a page but did not want it to appear on your webite from the home page? Maybe you wanted to link to it from elsewhere but did not want it categorized with the rest of your navigation? This plugin is one I use ALL the time. Whenever I want to create a page that is not included in my main navigation, I simply click on exclude and the page exists and is public, but not automatically linked along with your other pages.

Link to Post If you want to decrease your bounce rate, it’s important to use this plugin as you can highlight a magical word in your blog entry and link to a related post within your site. This keeps people on your website, rather then bouncing out to other websites. (For example, click on the word “magical“). I know WordPress just updated their program so they now do this, but I can’t talk about great plugins without linking to the developer that came up with this idea originally. :)

1-click Retweet/Share/Like (Also known as LinksAlpha) This plugin is AWESOME. Every time I post an entry on my blog, it sends a notice to my Twitter, my personal facebook, and my facebook fan page. It definitely helps with notifying my readers of new content. There are other plugins that post to social networks, but nothing nearly as good as this plugin.

All in One SEO Pack In order for people to see your post pop up in a google search, it helps to have great SEO customization. Any time I’ve had success with having my post found when someone googles for information, it was because I used this SEO pack and it helped me apply information to it like Meta tags and descriptions that help bring traffic.

Star Rating for Reviews I use this all the time for my reviews. It gives your reader a visual idea on what you’re rating a product. It does full and half numbers, although no luck for quarter numbers. Maybe in an update. Even so, its a really simple and much needed plugin any time you are rating a product.

SexyBookmarks (by Shareaholic) Just in case anyone has seen it on other websites and wondering what plugin it was. Check out the bottom of this post that shows graphics, “Sharing is Caring”. I’ve seen this on other websites and it wasn’t until a few days ago that I found out what plugin it was. It’s highly customizable to dozens of different social media outlets. It really allows you to choose who you want to share your content with.

Twitterlink Comments This plugin allows your commenter (Oh I really love when people comment) link to their twitter profile. Because I live twitter, it helps me find them and follow them! It also helps me put a name to a profile! Sometimes I know a twitter person but haven’t put two and two together for their website. This plugin helps!

These are just some of the many plugins available on WordPress and new ones are coming out every day. However the ones listed above have proven to me of their worth over time. In my opinion, these are plugins that every blogger should implement in their blog. I can’t imagine wordpress without them.

Stumbling Saturday: Best Finds of Week 4/16

I know. I know. I have just discovered StumbleUpon. Granted I knew about StumbleUpon for at LEAST a year (if not two) but never really GOT it until the other day and I think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. If you aren’t familiar with StumbleUpon, let me break it down for you. StumbleUpon is an add-on to your browser (no worries about “spyware” and “viruses”) as StumbleUpon is completely legit. After you have installed the toolbar, you will notice that you have a button that says “Stumble”. Based on your past “Likes/dislikes” it will bring you a brand new page to discover that you will most likely really enjoy. But — how do they know what you like?

Whenever you visit a website, any website, you will click on the “I Like It” or the thumbs down button. StumbleUpon will remember and then help you “stumble upon” great finds. That being said, because of StumbleUpon, I have found some great sites. I have decided that I am going to share some of my favorite links I have “stumbled upon” this past week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

  • http://bookshelfporn.com/ Because nothing turns me on as much as a good bookshelf. (Just kidding) — but the site is pretty cool. Readers will enjoy it.
  • http://whenparentstext.com/ I actually stayed up late last night reading texts from this website. I could NOT stop laughing. Forrest kept looking over at me wondering what I was chuckling about. It was this website. Watch out, Mom and Dad — I may just submit your texts, next! ;)
  • http://www.ixl.com/ This is an excellent website for children and math. Not many sites that are education based for Pre-K are as professionally put together. I cannot wait to try this one out with Carli, who loves learning!
  • My Son is Gay This was a blog entry about one Mother’s son’s choice of a Halloween costume. You see, he wanted to be Daphene from Scooby Doo. This entry made me smile in a big way. If only all mothers can be so open and accepting of whatever choices their children make!
  • http://www.younghouselove.com/ – A young couple (with one beautiful little girl) and their home renovations. This couple has a natural talent for design. Check out their multiple before and after pictures of spaces they have altered and decorated. Amazing!
  • Irina Werning: Back to the Future (Photographer) – Loved these photos and cannot wait to see more. This photographer recreates photos from people’s childhoods but with the children all grown up! It’s amazing how close she is! Loved them!
  • Kale Chips Recipe – One word, “Yum!”

Those are some of my favorite finds this week. What were yours?

*GIVEAWAY* Neatnik Saucer (Eat with your infant!) Ends 11/27

From their press release:

Dining out with baby no longer needs to be messy, stressful experience. A mother-daughter team from Houston, Texas, has a solution for “neatniks” everywhere.

The “Neatnik Saucer” is their patented, 3-in-one invention that keeps baby tidy and happy while eating at a restuarant, says co-inventor and mom Danielle Batchelor. “It’s an integrated high chair liner, placemat, and germ barrier that covers everything within baby’s reach.”

With Netnik Saucer in place, Mom can relax knowing that dirty high chairs and tables are no longer a health risk. The sturdy rim and toy fasteners keep food and play things off the ground, eliminating parent frustration and embarrassment over spills and dropped toys. High chair straps fit th rough openings in the seat liner and sh ould always be used to secure baby in the seat.

Stylish and safe, Neatnik Saucer is available in a variety of water-resistant fabrics that are easily cleaned with disinfectant baby wipes or soap and water. It measures 28 inches in diameter to define baby’s space at the table, yet collapses easily for storage in the matching 12 inch square carry bag with pocket for essentials.

With a suggested retail price of $32.95, a Netnik saucer is recommended for ages 6 months to 3 years. The product fits all standard restaurant high chairs and some boosters and c hairs intended for home use. It is available for purchase online and at specialty stores across North America. For store locations, please visit: http://www.neatniksaucer.com.

The Neatnik Saucer is an innovative idea. We all know that infants and toddler’s alike are not the neatest eaters. In fact, they are sloppy and can be an embarrassment if you should ever look at the floor when you leave a restaurant.

I know that personally I have gotten on my hands and knees to pick up all the stuff my firstborn (who is now a toddler) has thrown down on the floor. I also really enjoyed the fact that it was something that was a barrier between the child and the seat. I am a complete germaphobe. There is nothing worse than a young child who is sick and they get sick so easily by putting their hands on something dirty or germ filled and then putting their hands in their mouth. ACK! It drives me NUTS!

The Neatnik Saucer comes folded neatly in a little carrying case, which is small enough to fit in the average diaper bag. Upon initial view, I was a tad disappointed. But only because I was expecting the base to look different. For some reason I had in my mind that the base in which they sit was made of a canvas, thicker, more padded material. It’s not. It’s made from a thin water resistant material that you can easily wipe with a damp cloth to clean.

On one hand, I really understand why it was made of this material. But I know my daughter and what if she had an accident that would require a good washing and not just a wipe down? I would like to see the Neatnik in the future that allows the base to be separate from the saucer for these specific type accidents.

The saucer itself is very large with plenty of room to put a plate and toys. There are velcro strands on the side in which you can velcro toys (looped toys) to the  mat so a child can play with them, but not throw them on the floor either. (I really liked that idea!) The straps are velcro, though — and maybe it’s the picky mom in me, but I think it would be nicer to make those straps the same material as the seat base with a snap, rather than velcro. I think it would look neater. :) (But that’s just me!)

It should also be known that the saucer is large and not a good fit if you are at a smaller table. I know that often when we were a family of three, we would sit at a two seater and then have Carli on the end. The saucer would undeniably take up everyone’s own “space” and may be more of an annoyance than a help. In fact the restaurant we went to had a small table and the saucer was too large to fit everyone comfortably. But if you are at an average 4 person restaurant table and have some room to skoot, this will be wonderful help to your dining out experience!

Neatnik is giving away a Neatnik saucer to a lucky family!

The Miracle of Me: From Conception to Birth *GIVEAWAY* (Ends 11/02)

Written by Amy B. Pedersen

Written from the unborn baby’s endearing perspective, The Miracle of Me is about life in the womb.   Using simple language and poetry, the reader goes on a week-by-week journey on how the baby grows and develops during pregnancy.  God is cited as the baby’s ultimate miracle maker.  Everyday objects like rulers and scales make it easy to visualize the baby’s progress but the most impactful feature of the book is the use of real in-utero photography.  Expecting moms and young children alike foster an early connection with the baby in their life through this medically accurate yet entertaining book.

I wish I would have received this book while I was pregnant. I would have throughly enjoyed the creative way in which fetal development is showcased in this book, The Miracle of Me: From Conception to Birth. The author goes through a week by week format in which she not only tells you a little bit of what’s happening that week (fetal development-wise) but it is done with a cute poem.

For example:

Week 6:

My facial features start to form,

and dimples mark my ears.

Tiny buds will be my arms and legs.

A beating heart appears.

Along with the week by week poems are amazing photos of actual babies in the womb during that time period. While they don’t do every week, you get a photo on every page or so. There is also a measuring tape to show you approximately how big they are during that given week.

I felt the book was absolutely adorable and would be a fabulous gift to give a “big brother or sister” so they can feel included in the pregnancy and understand what is going on with the growth of their new sibling.

The past two times that I have been pregnant (and given birth) I hadn’t seen a book that could relate scientific knowledge of fetal development to a younger person and in such a creative way. While there are plenty of children’s books that lightly touch on the subject of “bringing a new sibling home”, The Miracle of Me does so in a realistic way.

If you like the book, please visit their website, www.themiracleofme.com.   The hardcover is $18.99.

Please feel free to follow @themiracleofme and become a fan on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/themiracleofme . Let them know how much you like the book!

FRIDAY FIRSTS: Once a Witch #Meme #Book

This is a repeat from a few weeks ago. I decided I’ll just post my repeats if I am still reading the same book, instead of not posting anything at all. People keep asking me if I am still doing it – Yes! :) I just hadn’t quite figured out how to get around this issue of being on the same book and not wanting repeat content. But.. anyway =)

Here is my Friday Firsts: Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough (ISBN: 978-0-547-22399-5) 292 pages.

I was born on the night of Samhain, when the barrier between the worlds is whisper thin and when magic, old magic, sings its heady and sweet song to anyone who cares to hear it.

I thought the first sentence was nicely written and pulled me in enough to continue reading. It was nice to be able to read about a different paranormal character besides vampires and werewolves!

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and she was supposed to be one of the most Talented among them. But Tamsin’s magic never showed up. Now seventeen, Tamsin attends boarding school in Manhattan, far from her family. But when a handsome young professor mistakes her for her very Talented sister, Tamsin agrees to find a lost family heirloom for him. The search—and the stranger—will prove to be more sinister than they first appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful that it could destroy them all. This is a spellbinding display of storytelling that will exhilarate, enthrall, and thoroughly enchant.

Here is my Friday Firsts: The EVERAFTER by Amy Huntley (ISBN: 978-0-06-177679-3) 248 pages.

I’m dead.

It’s short. It’s to the point. It gets me wanting to read more. So we know the character is dead – so what is going to happen? What is their purpose in this story that is to unfold?

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Madison Stanton doesn’t know where she is or how she got there. But she does know this—she is dead. And alone, in a vast, dark space. The only company she has in this place are luminescent objects that turn out to be all the things Maddy lost while she was alive. And soon she discovers that with these artifacts, she can reexperience—and sometimes even change—moments from her life.

Her first kiss.

A trip to Disney World.

Her sister’s wedding.

A disastrous sleepover.

In reliving these moments, Maddy learns illuminating and sometimes frightening truths about her life—and death.

This is a haunting and ultimately hopeful novel about the beauty of even the most insignificant moments—and the strength of true love even beyond death.

Here is my Friday FirstsThe Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga (ISBN: 978-0-618-91652-8) 311 pages.

I want to NOT ride the bus to school every day, but that would be a waste of a really big want – it’ll take care of itself eventually.

Who wants to ride the bus? I certainly hated it and was glad I used to live in walking distance to my high school!  As for this sentance, I would love to know what this person’s reasoning behind not wanting to ride the bus. Just WHAT is their issue?

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Fanboy has never had it good, but lately his sophomore year is turning out to be its own special hell. The bullies have made him their favorite target, his best (and only) friend seems headed for the dark side (sports and popularity), and his pregnant mother and the step-fascist are eagerly awaiting the birth of the alien life form known as Fanboy’s new little brother or sister.

Fanboy, though, has a secret: a graphic novel he’s been working on without telling anyone, a graphic novel that he is convinced will lead to publication, fame, and—most important of all—a way out of the crappy little town he lives in and all the people that make it hell for him.

When Fanboy meets Kyra, a.k.a. Goth Girl, he finds an outrageous, cynical girl who shares his love of comics as well as his hatred for jocks and bullies. Fanboy can’t resist someone who actually seems to understand him, and soon he finds himself willing to heed her advice—to ignore or crush anyone who stands in his way.

Thanksgiving Tofurkey and Gravy…. Soda?

062edited

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Jones Soda. All opinions are 100% mine.

We received this lovely gift from our friends at Izea a few days after the Thanksgiving holiday. We chilled the Tofurky and Gravy Jones Soda in the fridge and then we got to work testing it out. To be honest, we were both kind of scared to drink something titled “Tofurkey and Gravy” soda. Forrest insisted that he saw white tofu chunks, but I saw no such thing. Are you ready to see a video of Forrest testing out the soda for the very first time? (complete with the Izea turkey hat?)

*Note* If you cannot see the video, please click on the title of the blog entry overhead to view the blog entry on it’s own page. You should be able to see the video, then!

I guess it’s obvious Forrest was not a fan. Though he’s really picky for the most part with sodas so I wasn’t surprised. I went ahead and braved it myself, and took a few sips. It wasn’t awful – and it definitely tasted “Thanksgiving-y” but I am not sure it’s something we would purchase for ourselves. It almost tasted sort of like soup!

105

We were mean parents and gave some to Carli to test out. She LOVES soda (often tries to steal ours when we go out) so I was wondering what she would think of it. Would she go “Ahhhh!” which is a symbol of success?

I don’t think she could have run away any faster! If she had liked it, she probably would have grabbed a hold of the soda bottle and took it from her father. The fact that she ran away only indicated that it wasn’t her thing. She sure is a sport, though! (And cute to boot!)

I think the concept of Tofurkey and Gravy soda is just hysterical. Not to be taken seriously, I think it would make a great gag gift to bring to social functions. I may have even given this to my brother had it arrived in time. It would have been too funny to get his reactions on camera (as well as the rest of my family).

On the positive side, it really doesn’t taste exactly like I thought it would. Sweeter, and lighter than I initially thought. I imagined my mouth full of a thick cough-syrup like feeling but instead it was light (for the most part). Forrest insisted he thought it was thick, but I really didn’t think so. More like, “Full of flavor”!

Although Tofurkey and Gravy soda wasn’t our thing, we still love Jone’s soda and the personalization they put into their products!
