REVIEW: #66 Emma Vol. 1 by Kaoru Muri

Title: Emma Vol. 1
Author: Kaoru Mori
ISBN: 1401211321
Pages: 192

Synopsis: (Taken from back of book)

An upstairs gentleman and a downstairs servant share a secret love. The saga begins. In Victorian England, a young girl named Emma is rescued from a life of destitution and raised to become a proper British maid. When she meets William, the eldest son of a wealthy family, their love seems destined. But in this world, even matters of the heart are rules by class distinctions.

Review:

Emma is another popular series that keeps popping up around the blogosphere. I’ve seen it on many blogger’s websites; bloggers with varying tastes. Something about this book was attracting readers of all sorts — and I was determined to find out what it was.

Last week I ordered Emma Volume 1 by Kaoru Mori from Barnes and Noble. When it arrived later in the week, I was very excited. After finishing up some other books, I opened this one and found myself quickly hooked.

Kaoru Mori manages to make Victorian London seem anything but trivial and boring. Instead, there was humor and intrigue — and romance.

We are introduced to Emma — a beautiful but shy maid who works for a former governess, Kelly Stownar (who I believe is to be in her late 40′s/50′s).  Kelly is widowed and known to be on the “tough love” side but very quickly, you grow to appreciate her for her little comments and her intentions.

One day — a young man by the name of William (who comes from a wealth family) comes to visit his former governess, Kelly — who he hasn’t seen in quite a bit of time. Upon arrival, William’s face meets the door as Emma is on her way out, slamming him to the ground. William, ego in tact, is not at all disrupted by his fall — which is caused by a “maid”. Instead, he finds something about her — something captivating. He just has to know her.

Emma, even a low class maid, is no stranger to having men fall in love with her. Used to turning possible suitors down, there is something about William that prevents her from turning down his attentions. Emma, Volume 1, is a light-hearted and interesting tale set in Victorian England that will have you wanting to read more! I just loved it and cannot wait to read more.

Because Once a Witch took me WAY too long to read, and I haven’t read much in the past month or so – I decided to start off with some easy YA/Children’s books for the week to get the reading mojo back in swing.

  • Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough

  • Horrid Henry’s Underpants by Francesca Simon

I have a TON of reviews to do – but pregnancy issues always seem to be pulling me away (will explain in another entry). But I really am getting back into my books. So, for that – I am happy!

¡Vamos! Let’s Bloggiesta!

This challenge is what I really needed after my mini-morning-sickess leave of “absence”. I have a lot of things to do to best utilize my website. After all – I really would like to improve the over all blog experience for my readers, myself, PR connections, publishers, and authors that I work with on a daily basis.

My website is a bit stale though – no? It was really fast paced for a while and then I got knocked out. I have a lot of catching up to do and this challenge, hosted at Maw Books Blog is going to help me do just that!

Basically they have a set of mini challenges, but you can also set goals for yourself! Many wonderful bloggers have teamed up with Bloggiesta and have written articles for us to help make the most of our blog.

Some goals I have for Well-Read Reviews this weekend are:

  1. Catch up on my feed subscriptions. Let people know that I still read them, and I enjoy what they have to say.
  2. Work on anchor texts – which includes going back in old posts and doing some major editing.
  3. Work on my ABOUT page. It’s my #1 hit and I haven’t even finished it! It’s nice people want to know about me. I should probably finish it!
  4. Update my BOOKSHELF. There are many books not listed (since October) so I have some catching up to do.
  5. Delete irrelevant pages.
  6. Create a Wishlist of wished partnerships and products that I am interested in reviewing.
  7. Fix the FAQ. I didn’t even know it was broken. Whoops!
  8. Add ADVERTISING information.
  9. Write reviews of books I have recently finished.
  10. Fix SEO Meta tags in each post (old posts) that did not have them.
  11. Host a giveaway of some extra books on my bookshelf.

I have quite a bit of work this weekend, and I hope that my daughter will allow me to work on it! We have a birthday party to go to tomorrow evening but hopefully I can get plenty of work in otherwise. Not sure if I can finish it all this weekend, but I will sure try my best!

If you haven’t already, join Bloggiesta. They are also giving away a lot of prizes! If you are a participant, feel free to add your link to Mr. Linky below. It is the new Mr. Linky, which requires you to leave a comment (checking the box that you are a participant) in order to leave a link.

I am so happy that I was finally able to finish reading Shiver this week, plus I was able to read and finish The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl (which I absolutely loved!) Not quite sure what I plan to read this week other than YOU, as it’s a pretty big book. So I am just going to play it by ear. :)

So I have read nothing for weeks, now. I have just felt so darn sick and tired, all of the time! I’ve felt sort of apathetic about everything because I’ve felt so ill so it’s been hard finishing anything up! I am really hoping to finish Shiver this week though. (I know, I know – I’ve said it before). But it’s been a difficult first trimester so far. :(

  • Negima! Vol. 1 by Ken Akamatsu (Review Pending)

  • The Resurrectionist by Jack O’Connell

Books I plan on reading this week:

  • Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
  • The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga

I probably should finish reading The Happiest Toddler on the Block, huh? I’ve been reading it for weeks! It’s actually a pretty good book and an easy read. So I don’t know what the problem is! The Resurrectionist is a good book, but so dark (in a way) so I have a hard time reading it. (Hence my reading the mangas to lighten my mood). I hope to finish those up this week, though. I also want to read Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater because it’s been talked about a bit.

After all the publisher/author requested reads the past few weeks, after I finish up The Resurrectionist, I am going to empty my mind a little bit and read some self-chosen titles. Then I will resume back to my requested review titles on the waiting list. Thank you for understanding. :)
