Here is my Friday Firsts: To the Nines by Janet Evanovich (ISBN: 978-0312991463) 352 pages.

My  name is Stephanie Plum and I was born and raised in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, where the top male activities are scarfing pastries and pork rinds and growing love handles.

The reason I love this series is that it is full of suspense.. and most obviously, humor. The Stephanie Plum series is so easy to read and get into. Before you know it, you’ll be on #9 and a huge fan. ;)

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Stephanie Plum’s got rent to pay, people shooting at her, and psychos wanting her dead every day of the week (much to the dismay of her mother, her family, the men in her life, the guy who slices meat at the deli…oh, the list goes on). An ordinary person would cave under the pressure.

But hey, she’s from Jersey.

Stephanie Plum may not be the best bounty hunter in beautiful downtown Trenton, but she’s pretty darn good at turning bad situations her way…and she always gets her man. In To The Nines, her cousin Vinnie (who’s also her boss) has posted bail on Samuel Singh, an immigrant who becomes an illegal alien by violating his Visa and extending his stay in the United States. When the elusive Mr. Singh goes missing, Stephanie is on the case. But what she uncovers is far more sinister than anyone imagines and leads to a group of killers who give new meaning to the word “hunter…”

In a race against time that takes her from the Jersey Turnpike to the Vegas strip, Stephanie Plum is on the chase of her life.

Seeing a High-Risk Fetal Doctor.. #Ultrasound #Pics

My latest OBGYN recommended to me on Monday that he would like for me to see a High-Risk specialist. Why? Well – when Carli was born she was only 5lbs, 4oz at almost 38 weeks gestation. The average weight around 37 weeks is about 6.5lbs. Obviously, Carli was not 6.5lbs. She was in fact 4lbs, 9oz when we left the hospital on Father’s Day 2008.

On top of a low birth weight, she also had low amniotic fluid and was breech. Was there an issue I had that was unknown or undetected? Had my placenta stopped working efficiently and caused growth restriction? My doctor wanted to be on the safe side and have my current pregnancy monitored to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Even though having a little 5lb peanut was kind of cool (man she got attention!) I can understand his concern. He also wants to make sure that it doesn’t happen again, and/or sooner.  So come Tuesday, I went for my regular OBGYN screening blood work (unrelated to high-risk doctor appointment) and Tuesday afternoon I got a phone call from the HR Dr setting an appointment for the following morning at 8:30 in the morning. YIKES that was early since it’s all the way in Orlando and I am currently in Deltona (and on top of that, rush hour Orlando is the WORST, and I had to drop Carli off with my Mom). But if I didn’t agree to 8:30 Wednesday, I would have to wait until a week later. So I went ahead and said, “okay” and went to bed early.

I got there around 8:15am, filled out some paperwork and waited until about 9:15 before I finally got called back to get my weight (cries) and blood pressure and ask me a series of questions. I was then asked to go back to the waiting room where I waited for another 45 minutes. Luckily I had Janet Evanovich’s Hot Six with me to keep me company. Thank G-d for books!

Finally around 9:45 I was called back for my ultrasound. I had two technicians, the regular one doing all the work and a student one who was watching and asking questions.  They were very friendly and I enjoyed being able to see my little bug! After the sonogram was finished, my tech asked if it was okay if the student tech played around a little with the machine and practiced. Hmmm.. more opportunities to see bug? Sure why not! I wasn’t going anywhere!

So Tech #1 left and Student Tech was like, “So what should we look for?” and we looked for the spine and profile. It was a lot of fun just watching Bug squirm around on screen. She was rolling and jumping and kicking and waving. It was.. wonderful.  It was still so crazy knowing I have a little baby inside me with a head and arms and legs.. let alone a nose and eyes and a mouth! I was definitely in awe.

The HR Doctor finally comes in just as the Student Tech was finishing up and he also ran an ultrasound on me to double check things. He noticed I had a fibroid mass in my uterus, which I guess.. supposedly is really common. He didn’t seem concerned. At first he thought it was a contraction because I guess contractions show up the same way. But when it didn’t change, he realized it was a fibroid. I am trying not to read too much about fibroids because I don’t want to freak myself out but.. I do know it increases my chance for a c-section by 6x. Not cool. But – hopefully it’ll shrink and go away!

Textbook Girly Nub.

He said fluids look good and the baby looks properly formed (on target) and doesn’t appear to have any down’s flags.  He stated that she was very active – and she really was! She was all over the place.. definitely an acrobat of sorts. It kind of makes me wince wondering just how painful she’ll be kicking me in the future. Carli was so laid back and not much of an acrobat in the womb.. so, if this kid has her Dad’s energy, I am in trouble from 15 weeks on!

Then what he would say next made my eyes bug out, “It’s a girl.” and I joked, “What – are you like… 50% sure?” and we all laughed. I was pretty sure you couldn’t tell a fetus’s gender before 16 weeks as parts were still growing. But I guess you can if you are skilled. The issue comes from thinking that a fetus is a boy based on the fact that a nub is present. But all fetuses have penis-like nubs early on.  But the girl’s nub eventually descends within itself and becomes girl bits. Based on the angle of the nub (he checked from all angles) he said, “I am about 90% sure it’s a girl!” He smiled at me, “But when you come back for your next ultrasound in a few weeks, I will be 99% sure.” I was really happy. We really wanted another little girl!

Quite a few friends are hesitant to believe it – because it’s so early and I get that. But for now, you know, if my fetal diagnostic high-risk specialist doctor tells me something, I am going to judge his word over Dr. Google.

My next appointment is on February 17th so we’ll see for sure then. ;)

REVIEW: #28 High Five

Book Cover

Book Cover

Title: High Five
Author: Janet Evanovich
ISBN: 0312971346
Pages: 340
[Rating:4.5]

Synopsis: (Taken from Evanovich.com)

Bail jumping in Trenton is down to small potatoes. Stephanie’s only open case is a small bond for a small violation, committed by a small person who raises Stephanie’s frustration level in big ways. So short of money and long on bills, Stephanie comes up with a plan –diversify! Signing on as an intern with entrepreneurial Super Bounty Hunter Ranger, Stephanie ventures into Ranger’s mostly morally correct and marginally legal operations.

None of this makes vice cop Joe Morelli a happy man. The cop in him can’t help but wonder as to the source of Stephanie’s expensive new cars. And the rest of him, the man who’s been friend and lover to Stephanie, can’t help but wonder if there’s more to the partnership than meets the eye.

The internship is downgraded to second priority when Uncle Fred goes missing. Even though Grandma Mazur is sure he was abducted by aliens, Stephanie sets out to look for Fred. He’s a perfectly average senior citizen, and he’s disappeared without a trace while running errands. He’s left his ten-year-old Pontiac station wagon locked up nice and neat in the Grand Union parking lot, the cleaning is carefully arranged on the back seat, and his wife is at home, waiting for him to return with the bread and the milk and the olive loaf bologna. Locked in the top drawer of his desk are photos of a body, dismembered and stuffed into a garbage bag. And locked away in the computer files of a another average citizen are the clues that will lead Stephanie to Fred.

Criminally original and stone brilliant, this Intermediate Bounty Hunting Survival Manual is blockbuster entertainment.

Review:

On the outside it follows the typical Stephanie Plum conflict. Morelli & Stephanie (Will they, or won’t they?) More blown up cars. Life in danger. That doesn’t mean, though, that it is any less comical. Our favorite characters are back in this fifth installment of the Stephanie Plum series. This time we get to know Ranger a little better. Now I understand why my friends are “Team Ranger”. I really began to see a different side of him in this novel and started to feel my feelings sway towards this Ranger, fellow. Morelli (who is sexy as hell – I’ll give him that) just seemed to take second seat in this novel.

Stephanie finds her feelings to be conflicted. On one hand, things are always so complicated with Morelli and he plays so many games. On the other hand, she wants to jump his bones. Besides this dual-love triangle, we get the horrible news that dangerous sociopath ex-boxer Ramirez (from Book 1) is back, and stalking Stephanie (again). On top of that, Stephanie encounters a little person who she’s trying to apprehend and her family encourages her to find her Uncle Fred (even though NO ONE likes him).

There is just so much going on in this book, but yet not at all confusing. I thoroughly enjoyed it as there was always something going on. It was a welcome break in between other more serious reviews and I recommend it to any of those in love with the Evanovich series.

The books I have read in the past week:

  2. Hot Gimmick (3in1) Vol. 1
  3. Blanket of White
  4. Four to Score
  5. Surviving High Society
  6. Fruits Basket Vol. 1

Man, I read a lot of books this week. Luckily most of them were easily reads and could red them in less than a day.  I would have to say my favorite of the six was Four to Score, but I guess that is no surprise? I also enjoyed Hot Gimmick as a close second, but it’s no award-winner (just mindless reading).

Books I am currently reading:

- Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I was recommended this book by a friend because although I liked the IDEA behind the Twilight novels, I hated the way they were written (as if I was reading something a middle school student wrote) So far I am enjoying this. It definitely has a more adult punch to it, which I very much appreciate.

  2. High Five
  3. Ju-On
  4. The Red Album of Ashbury Park – Alex Austin

REVIEW: #15 Four to Score

Book COver

Book COver

Name: Four to Score
Author: Janet Evanovich
ISBN: 0312966970
Pages: 338

Synopsis: (Taken from Evanovich.com)

Working for her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, Stephanie is hot on the trail of revenge-seeking waitress Maxine Nowicki, whose crimes include bail jumping, theft, and extortion. Someone is terrifying Maxine’s friends, and those who have seen her are turning up dead. Also on the hunt for Maxine is Joyce Barnhardt, Stephanie’s archenemy and rival bounty hunter. Stephanie’s attitude never wavers – even when aided by Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker and wannabe bounty hunter Lula, and transvestite rock musician Sally Sweet – and even when Stephanie makes an enemy whose deadly tactics escalate from threatening messages to firebombs. All of this pales in comparison, though, with an even greater danger Stephanie faces, when, homeless and broke, she and her hamster Rex move in with vice cop Joe Morelli.

Review:

Having Stephanie Plum’s apartment firebombed has never made me more happy. Because of her lack of living space, she is forced to temporarily seek shelter with Joe Morelli (who, at this point in time – is a favorite of mine). Yes!

Unfortunately, living with a tough cop doesn’t give Stephanie the ultimate protection from those who wish to do her in. Countless nasty death threats and death attempts, Stephanie is still shaking in her boots. The task at hand seems easy for Stephanie at first – bring Maxine in. After all, Maxine was ONLY accused of taking off with her boyfriend’s car. What could be so dangerous about that?

I will not tell you what – but something happens in this book that had me creating “La-dee-dah – YAY!” comments on my facebook (only confusing my friends, I am sure). For those who have read Stephanie Plum 1-3.. You’re in for a great surprise! (Can I still give another “Whoop-deeee dooop!!!”?) Ah, well you’ve probably guessed by now. Either way, it’s a must read for all Stephanie Plum fans.

On top of that, arch enemy Joyce is pretty active in this novel with Evanovich doing a great job of making me want to rip every single red strand of hair out of Joyce’s obnoxious head. (Breathe, Allison.  She’s fictional).

My gripes are low on this one. I only felt that it wasn’t as scary/thrilling as her others have been. The villains were rather on the tame side this time around. Still – a fabulous, entertaining read. Evanovich definitely does it again.

Books:
To the Nines – Janet Evanovich (hardcover) for $5.97

Middlesex – Jeffrey Eugenides
Synopsis: (Taken from inside of book)
A dazzling triumph from the best-selling author of “The Virgin Suicides” – the astonishing tale of a gene that passes down through three generations of a Greek American family and flowers in the body of a teenage girl.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls’ school in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking strawberry blond classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them – a long with Callie’s failure to develop – leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The explanation for this shocking state of affairs is a rare genetic mutation – and a guilty secret – that have followed Callie’s grandparents from the crumbling Ottoman Empire to Prohibition-era Detroit and beyond, outlasting the glory days of the Motor City, the race riots of 1967, and the family’s second migration, into the foreign country known as suburbia. Thanks to the gene, Callie is part girl, part boy. And even though the gene’s epic travels have ended, her own odyssey has only begun.

Spanning eight decades – and one unusually awkward adolescence – Jeffery Eugenides’ long-awaited second novel is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire. It marks the fufilment of a huge talent from a writer singled out by both Granta and the New Yorker as one of AMerica’s best young novelists.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
Synopsis: (Taken from back of book)
Colleen McCullough’s sweeping saga of dreams, struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian Outback has enthralled readers the world over. This is the chronicle of three generations of Clearys, ranchers carving lives from a beautiful hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. Most of all, it is the story of only daughter Megie and her lifelong relationship with the haunted priest Father Ralph de Bricassart – an intense joining of two hearts and souls that dangerously oversteps sacred boundries of ethics and dogama.

A poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit, Colleen McCullough’s acclaimed masterwork remains a monumental literary achievement – a landmark novel to be cherished and read again and again.

These were just must-reads that I had to have! No more though – for a while! Really.

REVIEW: #11 – Three to Get Deadly

Book Cover

Book Cover

Title: Three to get Deadly
Author: Janet Evanovich
ISBN: 0312966091
Pages: 396

Synopsis: (Taken from Evanovich.com)

Stephanie Plum, the brassy babe in the powder blue Buick, is back, and she’s having a bad hair day – for the whole month of January.

She’s been given the unpopular task of finding Mo Bedemeir, Trenton’s most beloved citizen, arrested for carrying concealed, gone no-show for his court appearance.

And to make matters worse, she’s got Lula, a former hooker turned file clerk–now a wannabe bounty hunter–at her side, sticking like glue. Lula’s big and blonde and black, and itching to get the chance to lock up a crook in the trunk of her car.

Morelli, the New Jersey vice cop with the slow-burning smile that undermines a girl’s strongest resolve is being polite. So what does that mean? Has he found a new love? Or is he manipulating Steph, using her in his police investigation, counting on her unmanageable curiosity and competitive Jersey attitude?

Once again, the entire One for the Money crew is in action, including Ranger and Grandma Mazur, searching for Mo, tripping down a trail littered with drug dealers, leading Stephanie to suspect Mo has traded his ice-cream scoop for a vigilante gun.

Cursed with a disastrous new hair color and an increasing sense that it’s really time to get a new job, Stephanie spirals and tumbles through Three to Get Deadly with all the wisecracks and pace her fans have come to expect.

Review:

Evanovich spins another thrilling tale starring bad-luck prone bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum. What begins as a seemingly easy recovery turns into something much more devious. While attempting to recover “The Burg’s” favorite ice cream man, “Uncle Mo” – Stephanie’s life is in much more danger (than usual). Being shot at, stalked, and having your life threatened is all in a day’s work – right?

The third installment to the Stephanie Plum series only makes me want to push Janet Evanovich in making this an actual television on HBO or (at least Fox).  This book was a nice mixture of humor, sexuality,  mystery, and murder. Who could ask for more?

The only thing this novel lacked was a sufficient enough amount of swoon-worthy vice cop, Joe Morelli (who I have come to have a literature crush on).  He’s right up there with Jamie Fraiser from “Outlander”. Oh yeah. (I think it’s safe to assume that all Evanovich readers feel the same way). More Morelli, please! (Where is a t-shirt when you need one?)
