The early summer sky was the color of cat vomit. Of course, Tally thought, you’d have to feed your cat only salmon-flavored cat food for a while, to get the pinks right.

What a painted picture.. I kept reading!

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that?Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. Not for her license — for turning pretty. In Tally’s world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to be pretty. She’d rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world — and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

He saw the first tree shudder and fall, far off in the distance.

No, it’s not the most engaging sentence. It definitely takes a few before you begin to start wondering what is happening and why! But because the topic interested me and it’s such a short book, I decided to keep reading!

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Luke has never been to school. He’s never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend’s house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend.

Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He’s lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family’s farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside.

Then, one day Luke sees a girl’s face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he’s met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows — does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?

In the dungeons the darkness was complete, but Katsa had a map in her mind.

I have to say, although I wasn’t hooked — I definitely wanted to continue finding out what happened next. I mean – why was she in a dark dungeon? The map was already in her mind, so she must do this often.

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight—she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.

When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change. She never expects to become Po’s friend. She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace—or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away . . . a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone.

Booking Through Thursday #Meme

Every Thursday, Booking Through Thursday asks a book-ish question. This week, the question was:

How do you feel about illustrations in your books? Graphs? Photos? Sketches?

That is very easy – I love illustrations. In fact, I love them even more in educational books as they help visual students learn by seeing. Some concepts, which have been difficult to learn without pictures (Anatomy & Physiology, or Organic Chemistry) due best with little cartoons and sketches. When they are actual cartoons, it makes learning pretty fun.

I am also a huge fan of graphic novels/manga. In highschool, I used to roll my eyes whenever I would see someone drawing a manga/anime character or reading a graphic novel. What geeks, I thought. Who would have known 10 years later, I would be one of the biggest geeks of all — 27 years old and loving Japanese graphic novels!

I think reading without images is just fine – for we are able to come up with our own images and how we view and perceive what is written.   But I think even the most eloquently written novel could benefit from a few images or sketches for those who are more visual. Sometimes – just those few images will keep a reluctant reader — reading.

My Teaser: We the Children (Benjamin Pratt & the Keepers of the School) by Andrew Clements (ISBN: 9781416938866)

Synopsis: (Taken from Back of Book)

Benjamin Pratt’s harbor-side school is going to be bulldozed to make room for an amusement park. It sounds like a dream come true… or is it more like a nightmare? Something about the plan seems fishy, and Lyman, the new assistant janitor, seems even fishier. When Ben and his friend, Jill, start digging for answers, they find things that the people with the money and power don’t want them to see. Could the history hidden deep within an old school building actually overthrow a thirty-million-dollar real-estate deal? And how far will the developers go to keep that from happening? Ben and Jill are about to discover just how dangerous a little knowledge can be.

Teaser:

Ben picked up his backpack and headed toward the art room. And just before he opened the door, both sirens began wailing again. – pg. 8

FRIDAY FIRSTS: Once a Witch #Meme #Book

This is a repeat from a few weeks ago. I decided I’ll just post my repeats if I am still reading the same book, instead of not posting anything at all. People keep asking me if I am still doing it – Yes! :) I just hadn’t quite figured out how to get around this issue of being on the same book and not wanting repeat content. But.. anyway =)

I was born on the night of Samhain, when the barrier between the worlds is whisper thin and when magic, old magic, sings its heady and sweet song to anyone who cares to hear it.

I thought the first sentence was nicely written and pulled me in enough to continue reading. It was nice to be able to read about a different paranormal character besides vampires and werewolves!

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and she was supposed to be one of the most Talented among them. But Tamsin’s magic never showed up. Now seventeen, Tamsin attends boarding school in Manhattan, far from her family. But when a handsome young professor mistakes her for her very Talented sister, Tamsin agrees to find a lost family heirloom for him. The search—and the stranger—will prove to be more sinister than they first appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful that it could destroy them all. This is a spellbinding display of storytelling that will exhilarate, enthrall, and thoroughly enchant.

¡Vamos! Let’s Bloggiesta!

This challenge is what I really needed after my mini-morning-sickess leave of “absence”. I have a lot of things to do to best utilize my website. After all – I really would like to improve the over all blog experience for my readers, myself, PR connections, publishers, and authors that I work with on a daily basis.

My website is a bit stale though – no? It was really fast paced for a while and then I got knocked out. I have a lot of catching up to do and this challenge, hosted at Maw Books Blog is going to help me do just that!

Basically they have a set of mini challenges, but you can also set goals for yourself! Many wonderful bloggers have teamed up with Bloggiesta and have written articles for us to help make the most of our blog.

Some goals I have for Well-Read Reviews this weekend are:

  1. Catch up on my feed subscriptions. Let people know that I still read them, and I enjoy what they have to say.
  2. Work on anchor texts – which includes going back in old posts and doing some major editing.
  3. Work on my ABOUT page. It’s my #1 hit and I haven’t even finished it! It’s nice people want to know about me. I should probably finish it!
  4. Update my BOOKSHELF. There are many books not listed (since October) so I have some catching up to do.
  5. Delete irrelevant pages.
  6. Create a Wishlist of wished partnerships and products that I am interested in reviewing.
  7. Fix the FAQ. I didn’t even know it was broken. Whoops!
  8. Add ADVERTISING information.
  9. Write reviews of books I have recently finished.
  10. Fix SEO Meta tags in each post (old posts) that did not have them.
  11. Host a giveaway of some extra books on my bookshelf.

I have quite a bit of work this weekend, and I hope that my daughter will allow me to work on it! We have a birthday party to go to tomorrow evening but hopefully I can get plenty of work in otherwise. Not sure if I can finish it all this weekend, but I will sure try my best!

If you haven’t already, join Bloggiesta. They are also giving away a lot of prizes! If you are a participant, feel free to add your link to Mr. Linky below. It is the new Mr. Linky, which requires you to leave a comment (checking the box that you are a participant) in order to leave a link.

Here is my Friday Firsts: The EVERAFTER by Amy Huntley (ISBN: 978-0-06-177679-3) 248 pages.

I’m dead.

It’s short. It’s to the point. It gets me wanting to read more. So we know the character is dead – so what is going to happen? What is their purpose in this story that is to unfold?

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Madison Stanton doesn’t know where she is or how she got there. But she does know this—she is dead. And alone, in a vast, dark space. The only company she has in this place are luminescent objects that turn out to be all the things Maddy lost while she was alive. And soon she discovers that with these artifacts, she can reexperience—and sometimes even change—moments from her life.

Her first kiss.

A trip to Disney World.

Her sister’s wedding.

A disastrous sleepover.

In reliving these moments, Maddy learns illuminating and sometimes frightening truths about her life—and death.

This is a haunting and ultimately hopeful novel about the beauty of even the most insignificant moments—and the strength of true love even beyond death.

Here is my Friday FirstsThe Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga (ISBN: 978-0-618-91652-8) 311 pages.

I want to NOT ride the bus to school every day, but that would be a waste of a really big want – it’ll take care of itself eventually.

Who wants to ride the bus? I certainly hated it and was glad I used to live in walking distance to my high school!  As for this sentance, I would love to know what this person’s reasoning behind not wanting to ride the bus. Just WHAT is their issue?

Synopsis: (Taken from Amazon.com)

Fanboy has never had it good, but lately his sophomore year is turning out to be its own special hell. The bullies have made him their favorite target, his best (and only) friend seems headed for the dark side (sports and popularity), and his pregnant mother and the step-fascist are eagerly awaiting the birth of the alien life form known as Fanboy’s new little brother or sister.

Fanboy, though, has a secret: a graphic novel he’s been working on without telling anyone, a graphic novel that he is convinced will lead to publication, fame, and—most important of all—a way out of the crappy little town he lives in and all the people that make it hell for him.

When Fanboy meets Kyra, a.k.a. Goth Girl, he finds an outrageous, cynical girl who shares his love of comics as well as his hatred for jocks and bullies. Fanboy can’t resist someone who actually seems to understand him, and soon he finds himself willing to heed her advice—to ignore or crush anyone who stands in his way.
