What is Teaser Tuesday?

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read.
  • Open to a random page.
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page * BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova Book Summary

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova | Book Reviews

“TO YOU, PERCEPTIVE READER, I BEQUEATH MY HISTORY…”

Late one night, exploring her father’s library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to “My dear and unfortunate successor,” and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of – a labyrinth where the secrets of her father’s past and her mother’s mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

The letters provide links to one of the darkest powers that humanity has ever known – and to a centuries-long quest to find the source of that darkness and wipe it out. It is a quest for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the legend of Dracula. Now one young woman must decide whether to take up this quest herself – to follow her father in a hunt that nearly brought him to ruin years ago, when he was a vibrant young scholar and her mother was still alive.

What does the legend of Vlad the Impaler have to do with the modern world? Is it possible that the Dracula of myth truly existed – and that he has lived on, century after century, pursuing his own unknowable ends? The answer to these questions cross time and borders, as first the father and then the daughter search for clues, from dusty Ivy League libraries to Istanbul, Budapest, and the depths of Eastern Europe. In city after city, in monasteries and archives, in letters and in secret conversations, the horrible truth emerges about Vlad the Impaler’s dark reign – and about a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive down through the ages.

Parsing obsure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions – and evading the unknown adversaries who will go to any lengths to conceal and protect Vlad’s ancient powers – one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil.

The Historian Book Teaser:

I flipped through the rest of the pages — when you handle books all day long, every new one is a friend and a temptation.

I remember when The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova was the big book circulating through book bloggers. For a while, now, I have had it in my hands but it wasn’t until yesterday that I decided to pick it up and read it. When I first heard that it was about “vampires”, I was reluctant. But after having heard of Vlad the Impaler on Ghost Hunters International, I was intrigued.

The way this “girl” (I am unsure of her name, yet) describes her father’s library, I felt like I was in pure Heaven. When her father said the above, I thought — wow, a book about people who love and appreciate books. I may have finally found my way home.

So far The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova seems incredibly well researched, so much so that I had to verify that this was, in fact, fiction rather than a memoir. Have you read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, yet?

  3. That is a lovely teaser!
I read The Historian pre-blogging and unfortunately there is something in Kostova’s style of writing that is not a good fit with me… I thought the book was ok, but not great. Hopefully you like it better!

It didn’t initially sound like my kind of read, either. Which is why it took me so long to start it. But the way Elizabeth Kostova writes is just really engaging. I don’t know anyone else who can pull off telling a story about someone telling a story about someone telling a story about someone telling a story. (I think I got that right?) LOL.

It’s based on incredible research of Vlad the Impaler, who Dracula was modeled after. It’s so incredibly interesting. Mystery, suspense, and characters with a love for books!

  5. I love your teaser! So excellent :) Thank you very much for stopping by my TT. Jaclyn @ JC’s Book Haven

  7. I have not picked this one up yet, but recently stumbled onto a brand new copy of The Swan Thief by Kostova for a mere dollar. Only problem is, now I feel daunted by how big it is, LOL. This definitely sounds like one I would enjoy, though.
