The Memory Keeper’s Daughter: Pg. 70-140

WARNING: Do not read this entry if you have not read up to page 140 as this entry may contain spoilers.

I like Al. Al seems to accept Caroline and her “daughter” without question. Even eagerly seeks to find her after meeting her many months before. Not only that, but at this point in the novel, he has not once mentioned anything about Phoebe’s appearance.

Dr. David Henry, on the other hand, is increasingly irritating me. His wife, Norah, has been on a downward spiral in the mourning of the daughter she never had the chance to see. Instead of talking to her, like a good husband, he refuses – which makes it harder for Norah to properly mourn. David is often absent from home in part due to his work, leaving Norah home alone with their infant Paul, and her depression. One evening, while he’s working on their anniversary – Norah drinks herself into a stupor and takes the car for a drive (bad idea). This destructive behavior is noticed by David, but not stressed into embracing her. Instead David does what he does best and ignores the problem and pretend it doesn’t exist – like he does the daughter he sent away a year ago. (Have I mentioned I am not a David Henry fan??)

I can’t remember the last time I’ve wished for a couple to split – but I definitely am reading, page by page, and waiting for the ball to drop.
